Dear Friends,
May marks Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to shine a light on a topic that touches every family, every community, and every one of us. Here on Orcas Island, mental health is not just a conversation—it’s a call to action.
With 73% (p. 73) of adults in San Juan County experiencing adverse mental health conditions, and national youth mental health statistics continuing to reflect rising levels of anxiety, depression, and isolation, we believe that promoting mental health with daily doses of joy, empowerment, connection, and fun is more important than ever.
Some ways the Funhouse has been growing good…
Our Día de los Niños event was a joyous celebration of Latin culture and the spirit of childhood. With delicious food prepared by Johanna’s Catering, laughter echoing from the bouncy house, the energy of games and music, and the colorful burst of traditional piñatas, the event brought families together to honor heritage and fun. It’s these joyful, inclusive moments that create the fabric of belonging—one of the most protective factors against future mental health challenges.
Meanwhile, our annual Science Fair was a phenomenal success, with over 30 youth participants, and a crowd of enthusiastic families and friends. We served more than 60 pizzas and 10 gallons of ice cream, turning our space into a hub of community and curiosity. More than just a showcase of projects, this event affirmed the value of youth voice, creativity, and critical thinking. Celebrating the scientific method is, in itself, a celebration of resilience: testing ideas, learning from failure, and growing stronger through the process.
From music and art to science and technology, our programs provide youth with more than just enrichment—they are vehicles for emotional expression, intellectual discovery, and relational connection. Each guitar lesson, coding workshop, painting session, or science experiment is an opportunity for a young person to build confidence, increase imagination, and connect with caring mentors.
Research consistently shows that positive childhood experiences (PCEs)—especially those involving engaged, supportive adults—can offset even the most severe adverse experiences. Whether it’s the joy of making music, the focus of solving a complex engineering challenge, or the freedom of creating art, our programs act as a daily prescription for mental well-being. They teach coping, foster hope, and model perseverance—skills that last a lifetime.
Our 25th Year – Fueling the Fun Through Community Generosity
As we celebrate 25 years of growing the good, we're energized by the outpouring of support from our community—and right now, that support is more vital than ever. Through our current Give Orcas campaign, we're working to raise $25,000 to keep bringing joy, connection, and creativity to island youth—and we’re already halfway there!
The Funhouse Commons isn’t just a building—it’s a place where resilience is nurtured, imagination is unleashed, and kids feel like they belong. Mental health isn’t only about fixing what’s broken; it’s about sustaining what uplifts us. With your help, we’ll continue planting seeds of well-being for the next generation—and the next 25 years.
Please take a moment to join our Village of supporters who make all this Fun possible.
