This May, we are celebrating the successes of the mothers and children at our shelter. Earlier this month,
celebrated Mother's Day with our residents,
honoring all the strong mothers who had the courage to leave their abusers and begin a new life for themselves and their children. Each mother received a purse filled with pampering products, a bouquet of flowers, gift cards, and hand-printed cards from their children. These gifts were provided by our generous supporters, and for that we thank you!
In addition, we are celebrating
six of the women at our shelter successfully completing a Financial Recovery class facilitated by the YWCA.
They learned budgeting, credit recovery, financial management, and more. All the women opened bank accounts of their own through our partner Citibank, which generously provided seed money for their savings accounts to assist them in building a stable financial future for their families. We are so proud of their hard work and accomplishments.
Moreover, we understand that
celebrating the mothers at our shelter means actively supporting not only them, but also their children.
Through a partnership with the University of Maryland (UMD), UMD students led a new program this Spring,
Special Friend Time and Children's Group,
which met three days a week, providing respite for both mothers and children. Each session was four hours long, and consisted of supervised playtime, homework help, and
trauma-informed support groups for children exposed to violence
, in which children learned about anger management, self-esteem, and self-love. This program not only supported the children, but
gave their mothers time to attend support groups of their own, meet for case management, or simply experience much-needed rest
. UMD students celebrated the children's graduation from their first Children's Group with a pizza party this month, and we are thrilled they will be returning in the Summer and Fall to continue this essential program.
Lastly, we celebrate you for making this work possible.
Thank you to everyone who donated to Do More 24,
needed funds for the mothers and children in our shelter programs. If you missed Do More 24,
you can still give to our Mother's Day campaign below.
We hope you will consider supporting the mothers at our shelter with a gift this month.
Regardless, thank you as always for your generous support.
It's because of you that My Sister's Place is able to provide a safe and supportive place for mothers and children as they recover from domestic violence.
