MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH !

Every year Mental Health Awareness Organizations around the world have webinars, events and many more to increase awareness of mental health and to spread the knowledge of the different resources available. These different organizations, along with people all over the world, try to bring more attention to the tools we have available for those in need of better mental health.

Mental health is a trending topic. This is great news because the stigma for mental health issues is slowly depleting. More individuals are feeling comfortable with discussing their mental health issues openly. Although this is great progress, we are far from finished.

We often misunderstand mental health because there is no specific definition. Mental health includes several areas. The different areas are one’s social, emotional, and psychological well-being. Mental health affects your thoughts, feelings, and actions. If you have positive mental health, you are better equipped to handle stress, be more productive, and realize your full potential.

Many of us are extremely mindful of our physical appearance, with what we eat and put into our bodies, ensuring we are healthy physically. We should take the same approach with our mind and be sure we are not draining ourselves emotionally. We have to feed our mental health as well!

Below are a few mental health resources, if you or someone you know needs assistance:

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

This month our Partner Spotlight shines on our SCSEP Partner.

We thank you for all you do to ensure our Senior Prince George's county residents find employment opportunities. We would also like to thank you for providing us with senor interns to assist at both of our Job Centers!

The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), also known as Title V, provides part-time work-based training opportunities at local community service agencies for older Prince Georgians who have poor employment prospects and are unemployed. SCSEP assists individuals in finding employment opportunities in the community through a variety of supportive services such as personal and job-related counseling, job training, and job referral. SCSEP providers also educate employers about the benefits of hiring older workers.

The goal of the program is to assist older workers to develop workplace skills which will enable them to attain permanent, unsubsidized employment, either with their host agencies or other non-profits, government or private sector employers. Participants are trained by a variety of employers including schools, physicians, health care agencies, hospitals, custodial and maintenance service industries, senior service providers, administrative and management entities, retail merchants, and transportation, security and technology companies.

Eligibility

Individuals who participate in the program must

•   Be a resident of Prince George’s County

•   Legally eligible to work in the U.S.•   Be at least 55 years of age

•   Have an income that does not exceed 125 percent of the federal poverty level (It is strongly recommended that individuals confirm their eligibility results with SCSEP program staff).

CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS !

In the month of May we raise awareness for Mental Health. While these conditions occur at any age, children and youth are especially vulnerable.

Children who have been removed and placed in out- of-home care suffer from mental health issues at a higher rate than children who have not been removed. Youth in foster care experience PTSD at an alarming rate and because their trauma is often untreated, they engage in behavior that is symptomatic of the trauma they have experienced. That is the primary reason why one third of foster youth crossover into the juvenile justice system.

Here are some Children’s Mental Health Statistics:

  • 20% of children experience a mental health condition in a given year.
  • 50% of all mental illnesses begin by age 14
  • During the COVID-19 pandemic there was a 24% increase in mental health care for children ages 5 to 11
  • Half of adults with children in their household say they are concerned about the mental state of their children
  • Black children under age 13 are twice as likely to die by suicide as their white peers and the rate of death by suicide among Black youth has increased faster than any other racial or ethnic group.
