Spring is in Full Swing!
Greetings members!

We had an amazing time at the recent WCISA Annual Conference in Santa Rosa, CA. Our administrator Kathleen Mahoney was there with our booth, talking about the great benefits of our organization. We even signed up three new members - welcome!! Thanks to all that joined us in California, and we hope to see you again in Columbus!

Registration for the ISA Annual Conference is officially OPEN! Join us for an amazing SCA Field Day, where we are scheduled to explore Ahlum and Arbor Tree Preservation's Columbus Headquarters and take a private tour of the Franklin Conservatory. Check out more details and register HERE.

Join Our Board of Directors!
The Society of Commercial Arboriculture is seeking nominations for an open seat on our Board of Directors. Any SCA member in good standing with the organization is eligible to serve on the Board. You may nominate a colleague or you may nominate yourself. Nominations should include a short paragraph outlining why you (or your colleague) would make a good candidate for the SCA Board.
SCA Board Member Position Description
  • Three year term
  • Participate in bi-monthly Board teleconference
  • Participate in one annual in-person meeting (at the ISA Annual Conference)
  • Assist in SCA activities at ISA Annual Conference
  • Help guide the association's strategic direction and represent the needs of membership in planning events, SCA Today magazine, email communications, general member benefits and other functions

Seeking Nominees for 2018 'Arborist of the Year'
The SCA Arborist of the Year Award recognizes an individual who has, through their professional and volunteer work, shown outstanding dedication to the field of Commercial Arboriculture. Nominees shall have demonstrated and advocated for high standards in the business of studying and managing trees.
The nominee:
  • Is a member in good standing of the SCA
  • Has worked to acquire exceptional knowledge and understanding of commercial arboriculture 
  • Contributes time and energy to sharing knowledge and experience to the benefit of other commercial arborists and the industry.
  • Complies with the ISA Code of Ethics.

SCA Field Day 2018
Registration is OPEN for the 2018 SCA Field Day! We have an amazing itinerary scheduled for our trip to Columbus, OH this August. Take a look and register now!

This year, we are honored to visit our own Chris Ahlum, SCA Board President, on his home turf! We will be touring the headquarters for Ahlum & Arbor Tree Preservation in Columbus. We will be highlighting the history of a family business that has been in operation for the last 40 years. Attendees will discuss the layout of the facility, built in 2012, and the operations of the company. Visiting local arborists has been a highlight of many past SCA tours, and we can't wait for you to visit our Board President's company!

Additionally, we will be visiting the Franklin Park Conservatory and getting a 'behind the scenes' look at the brand new (opening in May 2018) Children's Garden, discussing the focus on tree preservation throughout the development process. This discussion will include the garden design, building scopes, how construction was planned around trees, and the after care for both existing and new trees. Attendees will also have a chance to peruse the Conservatory either alone or on a guided tour.

RakeMaster Challenge

Who will take 
this year's Rake and Golden Helmet?

Date: Saturday, August 4
Time: 4:30 PM
Cost: $100/Team of Six
Free for Spectators!

ISA Chapters, Competition Judges, and vendors are all encouraged to enter a team of 6 to participate in this competition. Teams battle it out in an obstacle course of groundwork duties including raking, log-rolling, and knot-tying; the top team receives the ULTIMATE HONOR of taking home the coveted SCA Rake and Golden Hard Hat award!
All competitors receive a free RakeMaster t-shirt. This event is a great team-building experience that helps develop camaraderie among colleagues spread across great distances. 
There is a participation fee of $100 per team, and all proceeds from this event are donated to the Safe Arborist Techniques Fund, within the TREE Fund. The purpose of the Safe Arborist Techniques Fund is to support research focusing on the development and training of techniques and equipment used in climbing, rigging and working on trees in order to provide a safer working environment for tree care professionals.
