Marking One Year of Resilience

This past Saturday marked one year since a tornado destroyed Centennial Christian Church's historic building and damaged Union Avenue CC's. Many gathered at the Fountain Park site to remember, hold vigil, process grief, and cling to hope. On Sunday the two congregations also participated in a grief retreat and worshipped together at UACC with guest preacher Rev. Cassandra Gould.

Pastor Williams Installed

In a very spirit-filled service, Oscar Lanier Williams, Jr. was installed on Sunday as pastor of Second Christian Church in Vandalia. He is pictured here with his wife Lois. Congratulations to pastor and congregation!

A Word about Mission

from Associate Regional Minister
Rev. David Woodard

We have all been immersed in the doctrine of mission statements. Take a ride in an elevator of any hospital; walk through the doors of most restaurants; visit any business physically or on the internet, stop by any church and you will see plastered somewhere, “Our mission is to….”

Mission statements are important. They share with others, and remind ourselves, the purpose of the work we are all about. Mission statements help congregations explore what it means to “be church” in the community. But when in the world did we get it in our heads that the mission was ours? The mission, the work, the ministry—all of it belongs to God.

So perhaps we should be more concerned that we are living into AND out of God’s mission. We, just like our mission, belong to God. So let’s begin living, not like our church has a mission; rather, let us live like God’s mission has a church! (Thanks Michael Kinnamon and Jan Linn)!

People are looking for a church, a church they can belong to, a church where they feel that their presence matters. People feel that they matter when they know they are part of something that makes a difference. That’s why it is important that we shift our focus and be intentional about being part of God’s mission. Otherwise, we end up doing whatever feels comfortable and convenient, and cross our fingers that God approves.

God’s mission has many churches. May one of them be yours.

Crowder Family Fund

Please continue to pray for Illinois/Wisconsin/Michigan Regional Minister Rev. Dr. William E. Crowder, Jr., and his whole family, as they mourn their son Sollomon's loss and prepare for a celebration of his life this weekend. The Indiana Region has established a fund and is accepting donations to help ease the family's financial burden and honor their beloved son's memory.

From the Wider Church

This coming week's Global Ministries prayer request is for Chile.

Pentecost Offering for New Church

For Times Such as These

The Prophet Micah reminds us what God asks of us:

“To do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.” — Micah 6:8

Not just believe.

Not just gather.

But to live in ways that bring healing and hope.

Because faith without justice is empty — and justice, at its heart, is love in action.

On May 17 and 24, give to the Pentecost Offering, which nurtures emerging and affiliating faith communities—spaces where people can encounter God, build relationships, and serve their neighbors.

Thank you for giving, praying, and helping the Spirit work.
