The Mid-County Citizens Advisory Board (MCCAB) will meet again on Tuesday, September 17, 2019.

Upcoming Grandview Avenue Road Closures
Grandview Avenue will be closed to traffic on Saturday August 24 th to stage a large mobile crane for the removal of the Tower Crane. The closure will commence at 4:00 am on 8/24 and continue until 6:00 pm when the last sections of the tower crane will be hoisted from the building.
Grandview Avenue will be closed (a second closure) on Saturday, September 7 th  from 4 am to 5 pm to stage a large mobile crane to hoist the Wheaton Office Building’s cooling tower atop the building as well as other mechanical equipment.

Wheaton Summer Concert Series
The Wheaton TGIF Concert Series will continue at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, as the Latin sound of Son Horizonte highlights the third of four free summer concerts at Wheaton Veterans Urban Park. The park is located at 11200 Amherst Ave. and Reedie Drive in Wheaton (behind the Safeway supermarket and one block from the Wheaton Metro Station). Attendees are advised to bring chairs or blankets.
Son Horizonte translates to “The Sounds (Son) from the Horizon.” Son Horizonte features Leonardo Garcia, an accomplished keyboardist, pianist, composer and recording artist. The group displays its talents in jazz, Latin, Salsa and rock/fusion. Garcia’s heritage and family roots are from Colombia. He has brought a blend of music from the Caribbean and Latin America to the Washington Metropolitan area for more than 30 years.
Executive Elrich Announces Expansion of Business Connect
County Executive Marc Elrich officially launched the Business Connect program in Silver Spring as he emphasized his administration’s focus on growing the economy. The Business Connect program consists of classes, counseling and connections to provide support to businesses as they start and grow in Montgomery County. The classes feature a variety of topics from marketing a business to financial planning to negotiating a lease. For more information, click here .
C ommunity Development Block Grant Funds Available

Deadline for applications is 4:00pm on Friday, September 13!
Applications for Montgomery County’s fiscal year 2020 (July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021) Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Public Service Grants are being accepted. County Department of Recreation Hiring for New Wheaton Center
Montgomery County Recreation is hosting the second of two job fairs to fill jobs at the new Wheaton Community Recreation Center, which opens in September. The second job fair will be held TOMORROW, August 10th, at the Recreation Administrative Office (4010 Randolph Road, Silver Spring). Interested applicants should bring their resumes and be prepared to discuss their experience and availability.

VITA Now Preparing Amended & Prior Year Returns for Low-Income Residents
  The Community Action Agency’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) partnership, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, offers off-season tax preparation for prior year and amended taxes (2016-2018) through October 30.  VITA’s free tax preparation services are for Montgomery County residents only. To qualify, residents must have incomes of less than $55,000. Assistance is available for taxpayers who need to obtain or file with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
 
Appointments are available Tuesdays at the Takoma-East Silver Spring Center, 8513 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring; Wednesdays at the Community Action Agency office, 1401 Rockville Pike, 3 rd floor in Rockville and Fridays at the Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center, 11002 Viers Mill Road, Suite 506 in Wheaton.

Are you interested in learning how to be an advocate for your community? Apply today to the Community Action Board’s Community Advocacy Institute! The CAI includes FREE workshops featuring guest speakers, activities to practice advocacy skills, and networking opportunities. Applications due August 16
* To qualify for this program, participants must be Montgomery County residents with household incomes of $55,000 or less.

The Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center offers English conversation and basic computer literacy classes at different locations (Wheaton, East County, White Oak, and Gaithersburg).
