Meet: Sarah Dunn
Director of Client Strategies, CG Schmidt
Tell me a little about your background. What was your first job?
I was born and raised in our capital city and I attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison. For my first job out of college, I worked for the Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau promoting the great area we call home. After that, I moved around the country for 14 years, working in healthcare planning and marketing for large health systems. In 1999, I moved back to Madison and began a career in an industry that was all too familiar to me - construction. It was a natural fit because my father owned a construction management company. I grew up attending ground breaking and grand opening celebrations around the state. I have lived in Middleton for the past 16 years.
What is your role at CG Schmidt? How long have you been there?
I've been the Director of Client Strategies at CG Schmidt for seven years and I feel fortunate because I love what I do. I search for opportunities to partner CG Schmidt with clients who have facility needs. In my role, I ensure we provide them with the best guidance, service and final project outcomes. At CG Schmidt, we work together to create exceptional facilities that improve the lives of others. We pride ourselves on really caring for our clients and providing service with integrity, accountability, innovation and excellence.
What is the best part about your job? The most fun --the most challenging?
Personally, it has always been a priority that I represent a company that has an uncompromising dedication to ethics and moral principles. CG Schmidt is committed to providing superior construction services with the highest level of integrity with an emphasis on community involvement and philanthropy. Not only does the company support more than 225 nonprofit organizations, but they encourage us, as employees, to donate our time and resources to improve the communities in which we live and do business.
The best and most challenging aspect of my job is the interaction I have with individuals from a variety of market segments from healthcare and senior living to education, corporate and more. In one meeting, I may be having a conversation about a medical environment, and in my next we are talking about how advancements have changed the environments in which we teach, learn and work. I thrive on the variety of clients we serve. Overall, my personal favorites are the unique, community-based construction projects that make life better for the families and children who directly benefit from the new or improved facility. As for fun, I work directly with one of our owners Eric Schmidt, who is a great boss and friend, and our team of 30 staff members. My co-workers make coming to work every day enjoyable!
How has CG Schmidt supported your community involvement?
CG Schmidt is in its fourth generation of family leadership and we pride ourselves on giving back to the community and local non-profit organizations. Giving back is important to me and, because of the encouragement I receive from the Schmidt Family, I currently volunteer as a board member for Catholic Charities and Unity Point Health-Meriter Foundation, and serve as the Board President for Children's Theatre of Madison. I am also the chairperson for the American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" campaign and recently co-chaired the Clean Lakes Alliance "Frozen Assets Festival".
What changes have you seen in the industry? What's your vision of the future for yourself, and for CG Schmidt?
I plan to stay at CG Schmidt as long as the Schmidt Brothers will keep me. Our office has grown abundantly as we have had tremendous success in winning and building education projects, and more clients from the corporate and healthcare sectors. As a result, we continue to expand and invest in renovations at our current Madison office while examining the best location for future growth and expansion.
How has membership in the Middleton Chamber worked for you and CG Schmidt?
The Chamber has worked because it has elevated our firm's visibility in the Middleton community. CG Schmidt has been completing construction projects in the area for decades and we established a local office back in 2006, but joining the Chamber has reinforced that CG Schmidt supports the Middleton community.
What is a typical work day like for you?
There really is no typical day in the construction business and that is what makes my job exciting. I might have days full of meetings and sales calls, but there are also days of prepping proposals and preparing presentations or representing our firm at conferences. I like the variety and freedom I have in my role. It wouldn't be possible without the wonderful support of Eric Schmidt and our CG Schmidt Team.
How about a typical weekend? What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies?
My weekends are pretty busy too - most of my volunteer work takes place on the weekends. But I do also enjoy traveling with my girlfriends, visiting my grown children, playing tennis, watching movies, and baking to satisfy my sweet tooth.
Tell me a little about your family. Any children, pets?
I have three wonderful adult children, two daughters - one working in public relations in Chicago and one attending the University of Kentucky - and one son finishing up his last year of high school. All three are very supportive of my career, interests and passions.
Closing thoughts? Advice for our readers? Anything else you'd like to add?
I will leave you with one of my favorite quote's...
"Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value." ~ Albert Einstein
