How the "High-Functioning" Label is Letting Us Down
The use of "high-functioning" as a label has been a point of contention among self-advocates for a long time, and a recent study is now providing evidence that suggests using the "high-functioning" label may be harmful, putting individuals with ASD at a disadvantage when it comes to receiving appropriate supports. Milestones agrees that this label leaves much to be desired. We want to continue the conversation and explore how this has affected our community, so we put out a call to self-advocates, professionals and parents to share their take on functioning labels and the role they play in their lives.
