ACADEMIC NEWS

PSAT Score Information
Students will be able to access scores from the November 2, 2016 PSAT test date online starting December 12. Students are encouraged to create an online account with the College Board (if they haven't made one already). This account will allow them to access current scores, register for future SAT and SAT II tests and remains accessible for students past their high school careers.  The College Board recommends that students sign up for their own accounts using a personal email address (students should have the account, not the parents).

Paper copies of student score reports will also be available for students in the Counseling Office sometime during the week of December 12.  Students should wait until they hear a morning announcement saying that the score reports have arrived before checking at the Counseling Office.

Following Winter Break, WHS will host an interpretation session of the results during the Advisory Period.

STEP-UP Jobs Program
I know it's tough to think about summer right before Winter Break, but the STEP-UP Summer Jobs program application is now open!  Last summer, 103 Washburn students worked in meaningful, paid, professional summer jobs through STEP-UP. STEP-UP places Minneapolis students ages 14-21 with barriers to employment in paid summer jobs at top Minneapolis businesses and local non-profits. These are professional jobs students cannot get on their own. All STEP-UP interns complete a 2-day rigorous work readiness training curriculum at MCTC, and upon successful completion of training are eligible to be placed in summer jobs.

The online application to the 2017 program is available now ( www.stepupmpls.org) and the application deadline is Friday, February 10, 2017 at midnight

Washburn students have worked at the following companies (just to name a few):

Fairview Medical Center
Boston Scientific
Wells Fargo Home Mortgage
Mayor R.T. Rybak's Office
University of Minnesota
Xcel Energy
Best Buy Corp.
Target Corp.

STEP-UP interns:
  • Gain valuable job experience
  • Build professional skills
  • Expand their network of support
  • Explore career interests
  • Earn a paycheck
Interested students should contact the CCC!

GIFT CARD DRIVE

Last call for Gift Cards!

This year we are collecting gift cards from Target, Cub, and Walmart. We have raised over $1200 in cards so far. Just this week help was provided to 6 families and 2 minors on their own. Thank you to those who have donated!!!!

Currently 25 students/families identified as being homeless/highly mobile. To  most people experiencing homelessness, the holiday season adds an additional hardship to an already stressful situation.  Please consider offering our Washburn students and families support during this holiday season by purchasing gift cards from Wal-Mart, Cub Foods or Target.

Cards can be mailed to the school (attn: Erica Lebens-Englund) or they can be brought to the main office.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

Alex Conover, Media Associate Educator
Alex has pretty much helped everyone in the building at one point or another. He's a really talented guy. Alex has a great attitude, takes professional quality photographs, and is a social media wizard! He is always there to pick up the slack and is willing to jump into any project no matter how difficult or time consuming it is.  He is amazing with all of our students and makes everyone feel at home here at Washburn.  Along with Marci (last week's recipient) Alex has been a great gift to Washburn students and staff in the media center these past two years!
Thank you for all of your hard work Alex!
