Homecoming Football Game
Come out for the 2016 Homecoming game on 9/30 @ 7:00pm vs. Southwest. Sink the Lakers! All three gates will be open (Ramsey parking lot gate; 50th Street ticket booth; and concession stand entrance near 49th). Huge crowds are expected and we'd love to have as much Miller pride as possible present in the stands. And bring some extra cash to support our concessions and the football boosters who will be hosting a bake sale. Go Millers!

Cross Country News
The Cross Country teams competed in two meets last weekend: The Mustang Invitational and the Roy Griak Invitational. The rainy and muddy conditions made for challenging races. The biggest success came with Emily Covert's fifth place finish at the Griak, a race that draws teams from all over the country. Emily is now ranked number one in the Minnesota Coaches poll. Congratulations Emily!

Volleyball News
The Star Tribune volleyball hub has a good piece about our volleyball program and Washburn's win over Southwest last night. A huge thank you to all the fans who came to the game -- we had a fantastic turnout!

Our annual Homecoming Dance is tomorrow on Saturday, October 1st 7:00-10:00pm. The dance is held at Washburn in the big gym and cafeteria.  With the help of parent volunteers we make it a gorgeous venue!
Some Info for New Families:
  • This dance is open to all students in grades 9th-12th;
  • Only Seniors have a dress up theme that is just for them (Safari); they have been asked to be respectful of other cultures as they choose their outfits; no masks or face paint please;
  • 9th, 10th, & 11th usually dress up (not Prom formal, but look your best!);
  • Going with  just one date is not required or the norm; often the most fun is to come with a group of friends;
  • There is not a professional photographer at the dance; many students make their own plans to take pictures before the dance.
  • Tickets were sold 9/22-9/29. Tickets are not sold at the door; you must be on the list and have your ID to get in;
  • There is a coat check but students are not allowed to bring large bags or backpacks, small purses only;
  • No in/out privileges;
  • Absolutely no drugs/alcohol, tobacco, or weapons allowed; security staff will be present

MPS would like families to be aware of an upcoming referendumOn Nov. 8, Minneapolis voters will be asked to renew the school district's current operating referendum authorization, which expires after the 2016-17 school year. If passed, funding would help Minneapolis Public Schools manage class sizes and provide supportive services and activities for students. The request would authorize the referendum for nine years and be annually adjusted for inflation. Property taxes are not projected to increase if the referendum renewal passes.

 Please check out this link to make sure you know the facts prior to voting.

I wanted to send along a fun announcement about the Washburn Debate Team. Last weekend, four of our traveling debaters went to a tournament in Skokie, Illinois (outside of Chicago), and they all did very well! One of the teams got to the semi finals of the whole tournament (over 80 teams in total), earning them a bid to the "Tournament of Champions" that will be happening in May in Kentucky. Getting a bid is not easily achieved, so we are super stoked and very proud of our team! Another thing that happened was that, within the tournament, students are awarded "speaker points" which are given based on individual performances. Alex Dresdner was ranked 19th overall, and Grace Klage was ranked 2nd!
If you see Luke Peichel, Lily Endo, Alex Dresdner, or Grace Klage, please congratulate them on their outstanding job! We are looking forward to the next tournament in West Des Moines!
