Holiday Help
The Washburn Cares Outreach Team is launching our annual gift card drive to help students and families. Last year we were amazed at the generosity of this community when over $2000 in gift cards were donated! We were not only able to help struggling families with the holidays but we were able to have gift cards on hand for our Social Workers to distribute as families needed them through out the rest of the school year. We have a priority focus on our students who are identified as having housing instability (Homeless/Highly Mobile).

This year we are collecting gift cards from the following stores. Cards in any amount help!
  • Cub
  • Walmart
  • Target
Also, if you have interest in joining the Washburn Cares Team, we are looking for new members who can help us solicit donations in the community in the areas of food, clothes, school supplies, toiletries, and gift cards. Come to our first meeting on 11/21 @ 3:30pm. Or contact Erica Lebens-Englund  with interest!

We have partnered with Wagner's for past 10+ years.  Their poinsettias are beautiful and we have kept the cost pretty consistent all these years ($12 / $15 / $20).   New this year are Wagner's gift cards.  This is a great way to quickly cross holiday gifts off your list and Washburn earns $3.75 on a $25 gift card and $5.00 on a $50.   All proceeds on this sale will go to the Senior Party.  Please note:  our alumni continue to be big buyers during this sale. So please, pay it forward or pay it backward!!!  Thank you!   http://www.washburnplantsale.com

Plant pickup is Thursday, December 1 from 4:00-6:30pm in room 107.

From our School Psychologist
Great accomplishments and long-term goals are not achieved overnight. Success is usually the result of hard work, deliberate practice, persistence, and trial-and-error learning. This often takes time, with many small steps creating a positive direction along the way. The resulting path can be filled with obstacles that may hinder or delay progress but, with persistence, don't halt it altogether. We can reinforce persistence by recognizing and celebrating children's small steps towards achieving positive outcomes. Read this short article about building a growth mindset in your teen.

TRIO ETS took Washburn students to visit Augsburg College. Students received a warm welcome from the admission staff, went on a student lead campus tour, learned about the Augsburg TRIO SSS program and were treated to lunch in the Augsburg dining hall.  Afterwards, students went bowling at the University of Minnesota's Student Union on the St. Paul Campus. Washburn appreciates our partnership with TRIO!

Mikhail Baryshnikov called her "one of the most innovative choreographers of this generation..." and commissions from American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago-to name just a few-certainly make her one of the busiest! Aszure Barton & Artists make their Northrop debut with Awáa, a work overflowing "with emotion and rhythmic heart," (Washington Post) manifesting the sensuality, humor, and "whole-body expression" that have become Barton's trademarks. Not only a dance, but a full-on production, Awáa combines video projections inspired by a vivid underwater dream with an original score of soaring strings and soulful tribal drumming. The end result is a hauntingly beautiful meditation on the life-giving forces in humanity and nature.

Reservations: Tickets are only available by calling Project SUCCESS at 612-874-7710.
Where:  Northrop Auditorium, 84 Church St SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455
When: Saturday, November 12, 2016
Tickets: Invited students can pick up tickets at the Project SUCCESS table in the lobby of the theater on the dates of the performances. Please arrive 20 minutes before the play to pick up your tickets. Each student/family may receive up to 4 FREE tickets.

Mr. Michael Mack exemplifies these qualities and advocates for the students he teaches on a daily basis! He gives students a fresh start every day and consistently expects the very best for each and every student he teaches. Mike consistently shows up to IEP meetings and shares valuable input that demonstrates his care and concern for kiddos.
