The U.S. Census Bureau's recently released Vintage 2024 Population Estimates highlight the ongoing demographic shifts across the country. Between 2023 and 2024, the population aged 65 and older increased by 3.1%, reaching 61.2 million individuals, while the number of individuals under age 18 declined slightly by 0.2%, totaling 73.1 million. As a result, the U.S. median age has risen to a new record high of 39.1 years.
The Texas Demographic Center has created a county-level median age map based on the latest data. Our analysis indicates that although Texas is experiencing similar aging trends, it remains younger than the nation, with a median age of 35.8. Nearly half of Texas counties have a median age below the national figure. The youngest populations are concentrated in central urban areas, the Permian Basin, and along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The new estimates also include detailed demographic data sorted by race, age, sex, and Hispanic origin for the nation, states, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, as well as counties.
