Cybersecurity Reminder from the ITS Security Team

Protecting your ETSU and other account information can help you have a low-stress and safe semester. If you receive unexpected emails, text messages, or calls asking you to provide passwords or other personal or financial information, be cautious. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • No one should ever ask you for your password, and you should never share passwords.
  • If a hyperlink takes you to a web page you do not recognize, especially one that asks for your password, confirm that the site is legitimate with the ITS Help Desk or the ITS Security team.
  • Watch for scammers who send you unexpected bills, unrealistic or suspicious offers, or threats of account closure.

Cybercriminals hope to trigger emotional responses to pressure you into immediately providing your password, bank account number, or credit card information. Defeat cyber threats by slowing down, evaluating the source, and checking for validity. If you recognize an email scam, report it with the Phish Alert button in your ETSU Outlook account. Reporting scammers helps our security team block malicious activity and protect the ETSU community. For additional tips, visit the Cybersecurity Awareness page.

ATS Relocation

ITS’s Academic Technology Services (ATS) team has relocated from Sherrod Library to the fourth floor of Nicks Hall. While all ATS training workshops will be offered virtually this semester, in-person support is still available for many services, including course development, video recording, lecture capture, and more. The ATS team can be reached in the following ways:

Accessibility Training

Creating accessible content at ETSU is an essential part of how we take care of and support our campus community. Beyond being the right thing to do, accessible content is required by both university policy and federal law. To help faculty, staff, and students meet these expectations, ITS, along with several other ETSU departments across campus have collaborated to develop a centralized hub that brings together accessibility resources, tools, guidance, and training opportunities.

Wi-Fi Calling

Having issues with cell phone service? Enabling Wi-Fi Calling on your phone can improve call quality when you are inside a building with poor cellular reception. When you turn on Wi-Fi Calling, be prepared to provide an emergency address, as you will be prompted to enter one. Please note that some carriers may not support Wi-Fi Calling.

Access the Wi-Fi Calling setting:

Go to Settings > Find the Network/Connections or Phone Section > Look for Wi-Fi Calling

ETSU Network Access for iPhones

If you use an iPhone and subscribe to iCloud+ or Apple One, your device may have Private Relay turned on. Private Relay is an Apple privacy feature that routes your web traffic through secure servers to limit tracking. While Private Relay is helpful on cellular networks, it is not compatible with ETSU’s Wi-Fi network and must be turned off to connect successfully on campus. To ensure a reliable and secure connection on campus, please turn off Private Relay when using ETSU’s Wi-Fi. This allows ETSU’s network security features to operate correctly and ensures full access to campus services.

Access the Private Relay setting:

Settings > [your Apple account] > iCloud > Private Relay

That’s it! Your course folder will be created automatically, and you’ll be ready to upload, record, and share videos with your students. This step is required every semester for each course section.
