The Annual Spaghetti Feed Fundraiser was held on October 28, 2016
Chair: Debbie Payne Co-Chair: Louise Benanti

Congratulations to Debbie and Louise for this sold out event. Louise Benanti  passed the Chair baton to Debbie Payne this year after chairing this fund raiser for the last 19!!! years.  Debbie took on the role with enthusiasm and the two of them delivered another great event. Many members bought multiple seats and invited their spouses, family and friends to join them at the event again this year.

The spaghetti served is Dennice DiGirolamo's father's recipe from long ago. Also on the menu were an antipasto plate, homemade garlic bread, salad and wine so no one left hungry!

Attendees were eagerly bidding on the mouth watering display of baked goods as Houston Porter auctioned off the items so lovingly made and donated by our very own members.

Many thanks to our board members and several devoted members who prepared the food and served at our Annual Spaghetti Feed Scholarship Fundraiser.

The Spaghetti Feed was another a great success as the chairs met and exceeded their fund raising goal of $3,000 that will benefit 3 worthy young women in Petaluma who are bound for college.

Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest Luncheon
Such a delightful luncheon!  Starting with champagne and appetizers before the meeting, we enjoyed Roast Pork Loin with Roasted Apples and Warm German Potatoes catered by PS Caterers...delicious!  Our speaker, Matt Stevens, shared SMART train news so we are on the inside track. Meredith Young and her committee did a fabulous job on the preparations. Thank you, each and every one! We hope you will join us next month at our luncheon.

Thanksgiving Event Fills Hearts
and Tummies

We hope you were able to attend our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. We had champagne and appetizers followed by a meal featuring many favorite Thanksgiving dishes including:  carved roasted breast of turkey, celery bread stuffing and orange cranberry relish provided by Preferred Sonoma Caterers.

Some of America's greatest songs of the 60's were performed by William Florian of the New Christy Minstrels.  These songs have become true American classics from that era and brought back many memories to our members.

Several members brought a friend and we enjoyed this lovely event with new friends and longtime friends in grateful fellowship together.

Marilyn Boemerman and her committee did a beautiful job with all the decorations & setup. Many thanks to all who helped us make this year's Thanksgiving Luncheon truly a memorable occasion.

Mother and Daughter
Holiday Lunch
This annual tradition was held on Dec 6; and holds a special place in the hearts of the Petaluma Woman's Club members.  It's about celebrating the generations of women that have perpetuated the club by passing their love for the club from generation to generation; and it also celebrates the special relationship shared by Mothers and Daughters.  What a fantastic way to spend quality time with your daughter or mother or sister or friend.  Just look at all these shining faces! Champagne was served to toast the event.   Baked goods were sold to raise funds and saved the ladies who bought them baking or shopping time since they now had a fresh home made hostess gift ready!

A scrumptious lunch of beef bourguignon, buttered noodles with parsley, and sauteed vegetables was prepared by Preferred Sonoma Caterers.  Beloved holiday carols sung by a shining star topped off the event; our very own LynAnn King.  Thank you to Marci Terry for chairing this grand event.

Bingo Wins Big
We started the year off right on January 2, with a fabulous fun-filled BINGO luncheon at the Petaluma Woman's Club. We had games of BINGO with prizes and winners galore, following a catered luncheon of hearty minestrone soup, salad, bread basket and dessert. Our chair for this fun event was none other than our marvelous Programs Chair, Myrna Haire and her committee. They did such a great job! We were happy to welcome some guests and some new members joined us. It was a perfect way to start the year having fun with friends, and wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!

Festival of Trees Event

For 4 days in early December, the Petaluma Woman's Club was home to the Festival of Trees event created by "The Fabulous Women" a sister community organization that also supports women.  This festive event and their "Passport to Christmas Fund Raising" effort was sponsored by our club.  Members Kate Osborne, Sandra Wright and Sharon Matyja were some of the supporters that worked with Krista Gawronski, president of "Fabulous Women" to put the collaboration in place. It was a very appealing idea because of the many levels of benefits that it offered the community in addition to the positive visibility it provided to our club.
Local businesses created holiday trees that were then auctioned off at the event to raise funds for needy families and to provide grants for nonprofits in Sonoma County. Because of the holiday theme, wholesome entertainment, free entry, and the beauty of the presentation, thousands of people were attracted to PWC.  PWC sponsored Fabulous Women by offering a reduce rate for renting our building for the event.

 Welcome Our New Members!
Do you remember the first event you attended at the Petaluma Woman's Club?  Our guests always appreciate some TLC, and are more likely to join the club when they receive a warm welcome.  It's up to every member to be a visitor host.  The first step is to watch for the pink badges that guests and new members are wearing to make it easy for us to identify them. Guests are often at the front of the room standing alone!  Go up and introduce yourself.  Find out about them, then see if you can introduce them to other members who may share their interests . Introduce them to Lori Nelson or ShoSho Urfer, our New Member Liasons who can answer guests' questions about membership.  Help our visitors find a seat at your table or with long time members.  New Members keep our club vital and alive.

Our newest members are: Kate Hawke, Suzanne Clarke, and Cindy Grove.  (watch for their bios and photos in our next newsletter).

Louise Benanti

Louise and her husband John have lived in Petaluma for 42 years.  They have two children, Mark and Lauren.  Louise was born, raised and worked in San Francisco and, after 25 years as a legal secretary working for patent attorneys, she retired.  Her addiction to gardening led her to the Petaluma Garden Club where she was President for 3 years in a row and was an active member of the Luther Burbank District Board of Directors.  For many years she helped organize the Petaluma Museum's "Through the Garden Gate" garden tour, as well as their Christmas Victorian Tea and monthly docents' meetings.  Louise joined PWC in 1994 and is a charter member of Petaluma Woman's Club Evening-Group, founded by Connie Mahoney in 1995. Louise has the distinction of being the only member to have been President of both
the Day and Evening Groups.  She loves every member and every aspect of the Petaluma Woman's Club (PWC). And we All love her!

I have been a member for two and a half years. I joined for the opportunity to meet and get to know women in the community. I also appreciate the history that the club represents. As a Financial Advisor at Edward Jones, I decided to serve on the board because I enjoy supporting the club in any way that I can.  It was my hope that my professional expertise would be of value to the club and I was excited to work with other experienced women on the board. An additional goal was to learn more about this wonderful club and all that we do.

I enjoy spending time with my family, most of whom live locally. I grew up in Sonoma County with my mom and younger brother and sister. The other half of my family is in Canada, which is where I was born. My interests include reading, cooking, music (just listening, I'm not a musician), and spending time with friends. I am an animal lover and advocate, with one cat at home and plans to adopt dogs as soon as my living situation allows. I'm also actively involved in the Petaluma community through several volunteering activities and boards.

The current club officers are approaching the end of what has been a very busy year. There has been an unusual amount of necessary work to be done on the clubhouse itself; huge items such as the floor and dry rot and smaller items such as the rail and the back door that involves serious safety issues. The same problems also highlighted the need to increase our funding: hence the extra fundraisers and increases in rental fees to keep them comparable to current fees throughout Petaluma.

The most daunting task this year has been rewriting the bylaws in order to consolidate all our efforts under one board. We wanted to maintain continuity, keep the bylaws as simple and clear as possible and ensure that in the consolidation process every officer's role was well defined and manageable. In order to meet these goals we have created two separate documents. The bylaws will define each position and it's responsibilities. A separate board policy manual will outline the nitty-gritty details of each officer's duties, related timelines etc. by separating the information this way we keep the bylaws straightforward and relatively timeless while the details listed in the board policy manual can be altered easily to provide flexibility as needs change.

I want to thank all the members of my board as well as Barbara Crandell and all the members of the evening board for all their hard work and dedication. It is the cooperation and goodwill of everyone that has made this a very good year!

Barbara Crandell

Dear fellow PWC members,
It has been a very eventful time for our club over the last eight months. I have been privileged to be working this year with resourceful, diligent, supportive and enthusiastic Board members. Despite extra Board meetings to take care of immediate needs, they have answered the call and showed up with smiles! Additionally, the Evening and the Day Boards have worked together this year to move forward with designated projects and I sincerely appreciate Dennice DiGirolamo, the day President for making this happen.

We have survived construction in our storage room behind the dishwasher and averted additional problems with a very timely repair, and I know we are all excited to see the dishwasher room repaired! I am so happy to report construction began as scheduled, February 13th, 2017.
We have had wi-fi added to the building and consolidated it with phone and messaging services saving money. Pay Pal, an online service for credit card charges for our fundraisers has been set up and we are working to get it fully functional. Some other minor maintenance items needing attention will be checked off our list over the next two-three months.

I have had the honor of working with the dynamic rental duo, Sandy Spring and Rosemary Hart who have researched and brought our rental fees up to market value. Soon we will have updated contracts to better protect the Club and our renters.
Thanks to the Evening Board members for all they have done this year in support of PWC and to all the club members for making PWC a fantastic place to meet, have fun and make new friends!

PWC Caught with
Shady Speakeasy!

left to right: Rosemary Hart, LynAnn King, Debbie Daunt, Shirley Pozzi and Sandy Spring

The October "Great Gatsby" Evening event had lots of fun surprises!  Members were required to give the secret password in order to enter. Bouncers James Swanseen and  John Otti, played their roles well, hassling those who tried to get in without the password!  Those who were lucky enough to pass were ushered into an elegant and lively event.  Event Chair LynAnn King and her co-chair Rosemary Hart put together a memorable evening.

Great Gatsby Security Team: John Otti
and James Swanseen

Special applause goes to Rosemary for the great decorations! The center pieces were particularly lovely featuring gold balloons encircled by ostrich feathers and perched in delicate crystal candle holders.  Each centerpiece was on a circle shaped mirror nested into gold satin fabric.

The cleverly folded napkins were a hit, reminiscent of men's tuxedos.  A sign in the bar area read "Prohibition Ends Here!" and indeed the entire contents of the club's bar was featured on the mantel and after dinner drinks that were served on the posh dessert table.
No Gatsby party could be complete without the "Great Gatsby."  The part of the Great Gatsby was played by Rosemary's dapper hubby Peter Hart for the event. Many of the women enjoyed posing at the photo booth with him in their roaring twenties attire.  Lemon Drops from Sonoma Coast Spirits were the featured drink, served up by another handsome gentleman, Peter Coranado. Since we usually do not have men at our events, it was an especially pleasant diversion, and who doesn't love to be waited on?

On stage, "The Great Gatsby" movie was projected onto our grand pull down screen (donated by Kate Osborne and Linda Frates Anderson last year).  The main course was Chicken a la King in croissant style pastry baskets, prepared by Preferred Sonoma Caterers.  The highly revered dessert was created by Debbie Daunt - Chocolate Mousse.

Once again thank you to the committee members for all their hard work and the splendid result: Debbie Daunt, Jeanne Chalmers, Kathy Cass, Shirley Pozzi, Erica Cardenas, and Barbara Smith.  The committee should especially be commended because it was a small one, so everyone needed to put in extra effort.  These events really need 10 committee members to support the process.

Its always fun to shop when there are an array of great choices and the price is right!  Plus this is truly no guilt shopping  because it benefits charity and you clean out your closet at the same time!  Any items  not selected are donated to Alphabet Soup, the local resale shop that supports our schools.

That  idea was the inspiration behind the name of this event:  "One Woman's Trash is Another Woman's Treasure".  The all hors d'oeuvres event made it easy to get to fun part of the event, social shopping.
Thank you to Sue Bunker and her committee for displaying the items so nicely and this fun event!

Winter Wonderland Melts Hearts
Winter Wonderland: 12/15/16
This event is always a fun way to get into the holiday spirit and our generous members donated coats to COTS for their warm coat drive to benefit local homeless people.

Chair: Janny Van Aalderen set the festive winterland scene with mostly white decorations and holiday lights. A roaring fire in our beautiful fireplace room greeted members as they came into the party.

Two beautiful flocked and decorated holiday trees in the fireplace room added cheer and were later auctioned off
Large snowflakes on either side of the stage were loaned by the Fabulous Women, and framed the pianist nicely. Marilyn Wilson played favorite Holiday carols during this festive event.
Dinner featured a delicious salmon that was a rare treat and well prepared by "Fit for a King" catering. Christmas carols followed dinner led by Janny and LynAnn King.  Dessert featured some beautiful and tasty cookies and snowballs.

A tip of the hat to our committee members who made the event such a cozy respite from the busy holiday season.

PWC hosts the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce

October is a key time of year for reminding the public to rent our club for the holidays and other events that may attract potential new members. With that in mind, our PR Chair, LynAnn King stepped up to put together her second event for October (brave woman).  This event is a PR event that spreads the word about our wonderful club through the Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce (PACC) to their members and the public. The event is free. The Petaluma Woman's Club has a group membership for the Petaluma Area Chamber of Commerce.

Individual tables were decorated with themed decor to give guests an idea of the types of events we do at the club.  In attendance were Many PACC and PWC members; as well as some new people from the community.

It's surprising how many people  don't realize that our club house is for rent.  That was why tables were set up to promote rentals (as well as club events) while  tours of the premises were offered.

Thank you to our generous sponsors and members who donated time, food and beverages to make the event special.  Sponsors included:  Jill Olson: Sonoma Coast Spirits, Out to Lunch Catering (mini quiches) and Diane Vetterlein of Events Fantastique provided salmon blintzes.
Thanks again to Jim Johnson at Studio 7 for taking photos at the event.  He always makes us look good!

These events also need support from our members.  Thanks goes  to the many board members that came to help and attend: including Sandy Spring to manage the rentals table; Louise Benanti, Sandee Wright, Barbara Crandell, Debbie Payne, Katherine Wells, Jeanette Vonier and several others too.
