June 2026 Community Connection

Financial Education for Seniors

United Way Mid & South Jefferson County was pleased to partner with Texas First Bank to host a Financial Education for Seniors presentation at the Nederland Mid-County Senior Citizens Center.

The program provided valuable information and resources designed to help seniors make informed financial decisions, recognize potential fraud and scams, and protect their financial well-being. Through educational opportunities like this, we strive to empower community members with the knowledge and tools needed to navigate today's financial landscape with confidence.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Texas First Bank for sharing their expertise and supporting our mission to build stronger, more informed communities. Together, we are helping ensure that seniors have access to the resources they need to make sound financial decisions and safeguard their futures.

A New Chapter at Samaritan Counseling & Wellness Center

We recently had the opportunity to join our partners at Samaritan Counseling & Wellness Center for a meaningful celebration recognizing a time of transition and new beginnings.

The event honored Robin McCutcheon as she retires after years of dedicated service and leadership. It was also a warm welcome to Lauren Rahe as she steps into her new role, alongside the introduction of the organization’s updated name and branding.

It was a heartfelt sendoff and a hopeful look ahead—celebrating the impact of strong leadership while embracing the next chapter of continued care and support for the community.

We are thankful for our partnership with Samaritan Counseling & Wellness Center and look forward to seeing all that lies ahead in this new season of growth.

Innovation Lab: AI for Nonprofit Leaders

The Innovation Lab workshop brought nonprofit leaders together to explore how artificial intelligence can be used ethically and strategically to strengthen mission-driven work.

United Way Mid & South Jefferson County was proud to host “AI for Nonprofit Leaders: Using AI with Ethics, Strategy, and Impact,” led by Toni Harris Taylor.

Toni shared practical strategies and real-world examples showing how AI can support communication, efficiency, storytelling, and outreach while staying grounded in purpose and ethics.

We thank Toni for sharing her expertise and inspiring new ideas for our nonprofit community.

Summer Reading Palooza Makes a Lasting Impact

This year’s Summer Reading Palooza helped put 19,264 free books into the hands of 3,333 students across four local school districts.

As United Way Mid & South Jefferson County celebrates 100 years of impact, we remain committed to fostering literacy, encouraging a love of reading, and creating brighter futures for children throughout our community.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the volunteers, school partners, and supporters who helped make this initiative possible—one book at a time.

Save the Date: Innovation Lab – Who is A.L.I.C.E.?

United Way Mid & South Jefferson County invites community leaders, nonprofit professionals, and partners to join us for our rescheduled Innovation Lab workshop, "Who is A.L.I.C.E.?", led by guest trainer Stephanie O'Bannion.

Originally scheduled for June, this important workshop was postponed due to anticipated weather impacts from a tropical depression in our area. We appreciate everyone's understanding and are excited to announce the new date.

This engaging training will explore the challenges facing ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households and the opportunities to create meaningful change in our community. Participants will learn how to identify ALICE households within their programs, better understand the realities many working families face, and effectively tell ALICE's story within their communities.

This workshop is especially valuable for organizations interested in applying for ALICE Grant funding through United Way MSJC.

July 30, 2026

8:45 AM – Noon

West Side Development Center | Port Arthur, TX

Networking lunch to follow

Registration for the rescheduled workshop will open soon. We look forward to bringing our community together for another impactful learning opportunity and continuing the conversation around supporting ALICE families across Mid & South Jefferson County.
