What it Takes to Pass

Hi, my name is Luis and the following is what it took for me to pass the PHR in 2017 and what I will use to prepare for the SRHM-SCP for 2018.

I was 25 and just completed my MBA from the University of Phoenix in March 2017 and immediately signed up for the PHR prep course. I started the prep course with 3 years of HR experience. On the first day of the prep course I met the instructor, Richard Dawson, I was immediately impressed with his credentials and his familiarity to speak on all HR functions. I listened intently, took notes, highlighted my books, circled and starred important topics. Everything in the prep books contained HR information that I never learned in my current job and quickly realized it would take serious determination to read, study and take practice test questions to receive certification.

Networking that Works

We all know the power of having a network of friends and associates that we can go to when we need help. Just this year, I have had several opportunities to connect with my network.

Two recruiters reached out to me about HR opportunities that they are trying to fill. There were three individuals that reached out to me for possible job referrals, one in healthcare, and one in data analytics, the third in HR. A consultant friend of mine was looking to hire an individual for a great career-entry opportunity. A HR peer, asked me to review a white paper he is writing. I reached out to two of my contacts as potential subject matter experts and speakers for Inland Empire SHRM. We were all able to assist each other through the power of networking.
My network consists of peers, co-workers, clients, individuals I have met at conferences, Inland Empire SHRM and SHRM members, and members of other professional associations. Several of my contacts I have met online through social media and through friends of friends.
In my experience, the number of connections or "friends" you have is less important than the collective information and resources shared. The knowledge, skills, and abilities that exist in a group of people that come together is considerable. Individually, we may know a lot, but together we know more and can achieve more.

IE SHRM offers professionals the opportunity to meet others for the purposes of networking and enhancing knowledge, skills, and abilities. Each monthly meeting offers the perfect opportunity to engage with your peers, expand your network and your knowledge.
