Recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month
As we enter the month of October, we take time to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month—a time to increase understanding, show unwavering support, and stand in solidarity with survivors of domestic abuse.
First observed in 1987, this month marks a nationwide effort to raise awareness about domestic violence, advocate for stronger protections, and provide crucial support to victims.
In 1989, Congress officially designated October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, bringing communities and advocates together across the country to confront this critical issue.
Throughout this month, we remember and honor those affected by domestic violence—those who have survived, those still struggling, and those whose lives were tragically lost.
By fostering awareness, encouraging education, and amplifying survivors' voices, we take meaningful steps toward creating safer, more compassionate communities. Together, we can break the silence, end the cycle of abuse, and offer hope and healing to all who need it.
