This Month's Briefing

Veteran Mental Health/Suicide Prevention Press Conference

Steady progress continues across our initiatives as we build momentum into the new year, with a strong focus on Veteran mental health and suicide prevention. On Wednesday, February 4, we participated in the Mental Hygiene Budget Hearing, advocating for sustained and increased funding for the Dwyer programs and Coalition to further strengthen the network of support available to Veterans and their families. We also urged lawmakers to expand access to Dwyer programs and resources for Tribal Nations across New York State, ensuring equitable support for all who have served.

In Albany, our Executive Director, Gavin Walters, was invited to speak at a press conference at the New York State Capitol, highlighting the urgent need for continued state action to address Veterans’ mental health and advance suicide prevention efforts statewide. Standing alongside legislators and supporters from both sides of the aisle, he shared a powerful reminder: “Protect those who protect us.” Suicide and mental health challenges do not recognize political lines—but meaningful change happens when communities come together. We are grateful for the bipartisan commitment to supporting our Veterans and for a community that understands this work is not about left or right, but about standing up for service members, families, and caregivers who too often feel unheard.

“Protect those who protect us.” — Gavin Walters

Supporting Veterans Through Suicide Prevention and Advocacy

Suicide among Veterans remains one of the most urgent and heartbreaking challenges facing our communities, as many carry invisible wounds — experiences and burdens that can feel overwhelming without the right support. This is why sustained advocacy, increased awareness, and accessible resources are so critical. Every conversation and outreach effort helps reduce stigma and open pathways to care. Suicide prevention is more than a program — it is a commitment to standing beside those who have served, ensuring their voices are heard, and reminding them that they are valued, seen, and never alone. We remain steadfast in advancing this work and keeping Veterans’ needs at the forefront of statewide action.

Dwyer Veteran Peer-to-Peer Support Program conducted outreach at the U.S. Army Department in New York Mills alongside the Utica Center for Development, which administers the Oneida County Dwyer Program. Utica Elks Lodge #33

Veterans Valentine's Breakfast 2026

The Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer-to-Peer Support Program joined the Utica Elks Lodge #33 for their annual Valentine’s Breakfast a meaningful gathering that brought together Veterans, families, caregivers, and community leaders. Gavin Walters, Executive Director of the Dwyer Coalition, shared a powerful parable about a person trapped in a hole, reminding us how often Veterans feel isolated and how vital it is for those who understand to “jump in” and help them out. He emphasized the crucial role families, caregivers, law enforcement, and community partners play in supporting Veterans through their unseen battles. Local officials echoed the message of unity and gratitude, celebrating a community that shows up for its Veterans and stands beside them long after their service.

We’re incredibly grateful to one of the local community photographers, Brian Lazore, for documenting this event and sharing an in-depth interview highlighting our work. Support local talent and check out the full interview below!
