Ethics Seminars

The 28th annual FREE ethics program is open for registration! This year's speaker is nationally acclaimed attorney Larry J. Cohen. His program, “An Ethical Day at the Movies,” is a unique and entertaining presentation, encouraging you to think and talk about your dealings with clients, judges, third parties, and other lawyers. Using film clips, news footage, and excerpts from television and the media, the speaker will demonstrate lawyers at their ethical best and, at their worst, and will review what we can learn from them. Among the topics to be discussed include client communication, dabbling, civility, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Please be aware that due to the worsening pandemic, we are offering two presentations as live webinars only via Zoom and one presentation in-person only. Register online today to ensure you are signed up for your preferred date!

Do you have an idea for an article?
The editors of the Rhode Island Bar Journal invite Bar members to submit articles and information for Rhode Island Bar Journal publication consideration. As a primary source of news and information for all Rhode Island Bar Association members, the Bar Journal is an outstanding forum for articles concerning all areas of practice. The Journal seeks original articles, written expressly for the first publication in the Bar Journal, by members of the Rhode Island Bar Association. Rhode Island Bar Journal submissions include:

  • Articles written about specific areas of the law or relating to the practice of law.
  • Case Studies of historic or recent past cases.
  • Counterpoint pieces to recent, previously published articles.
  • Histories regarding the practice of law and government in Rhode Island.
  • Book Reviews about law practice, legal, or political topics.
  • Bar Committee reports and information of interest to members.

Please click here to review the Rhode Island Bar Journal Article Selection Criteria, which also appears on page 4 of every Rhode Island Bar Journal. All issues of the Bar Journal since 2009 are located in the Bar Journal Archive on our website or by clicking here. 6 Tips for a Healthy Fall

Fall is right around the corner which means we are entering cold and flu season! As the temperatures drop, so does our motivation to stick to our healthy habits. Are you ready to finish the last days of the year strong? Here are 6 fall wellness tips to keep you feeling your best!

Boost Your Immune System: as the weather gets colder and flu season starts, it’s important for your immune system to be in tip-top shape. Eating healthy foods with vitamin C are key to fighting off infections. Remember to drink plenty of water and wash your hands often.

Buy In-Season Produce: during this time of year, a variety of vegetables and fruits make their appearance in grocery stores. Get adventurous and try a new produce item! Some of the nutrient dense options to consider adding to your plate: brussels sprouts, butternut squash, crab apples, cranberries, and turnips.

Prepare for Daylight Savings Time: as the sun goes down earlier, it can throw off your natural circadian rhythm. Go to bed earlier when you can, especially the week before the clocks change and try to maintain a sleep schedule of at least seven hours per night.

Moisturize Your Skin: harsh temperatures can make your skin dry, which can make it susceptible to infections and outbreaks. Remember to use a daily moisturizer during the colder months that is preferably made up of all-natural ingredients and is best suited to the type of skin that you have.

Try a Tech Detox: as the weather turns colder it can be tempting to spend even more time on your phone, laptop, tablet, or other gadgets—but this can be a detriment to your health. Fall is the perfect time for a tech detox. Instead of picking up your phone or tablet, pick up a book or take up another hobby.

Sterilize Your Most Touched Items: your cell phone, keyboard, remote, and tablet are all germ habitats. It’s good to make it a habit to sanitize these areas with Clorox wipes frequently. Especially throughout cold and flu season, make sure you’re sanitizing these areas weekly.
Technology Tip
Many lawyers still love to dictate. Lots of lawyers use Microsoft Word every day. Yet, a number of attorneys tend to rely on staff or old school recording devices for dictation. But, there’s a simpler solution; and, it likely won’t cost you any money. Look at the ribbon in Microsoft Word and find the microphone icon. That’s a dictation tool, built into Word. Click on it, and start talking. This is the droid you’re looking for.

This tech tip is brought to you by the Bar Association’s Law Practice Management Consultant, Jared Correia, of Red Cave Law Firm Consulting. If you need help with billing, client relations, data management, financial management, marketing, office technology, time management, disaster prevention & recovery, or any other area related to managing your practice, Red Cave Law Firm Consulting will provide Rhode Island Bar Association members with unlimited virtual consulting services (email, telephone, chat, video) FREE OF CHARGE. To get started, visit the Bar’s LPM page here, or just email Jared directly at [email protected].
Friendly Reminders
It’s Not Too Late to Sign Up for Your 2021-2022 Bar Committees!

If you have not yet signed up as a member of a 2021-¬2022 Rhode Island Bar Association Committee, you can still do so! Bar committee membership runs from July 1st to June 30th. Even Bar members who previously served on Bar committees must reaffirm their interest for the coming year, as committee membership does not automatically carry over from one Bar year to the next.

Please join no more than three committees.

Anyone signing up for Bar committees after August 15th can do so by contacting Membership Services Coordinator Sherilyn Gutierrez at [email protected].
Seeking Law Related Education Program Attorney Volunteers!

Your Bar Association supports law related education (LRE) for Rhode Island children and adults through three, longstanding programs: Lawyers in the Classroom and Rhode Island Law Day for upper and middle school teachers and students, and the Speakers Bureau for adult organizations. Responding to LRE requests, Bar volunteers are contacted – based on their geographic location and noted areas of legal interest – to determine their interest and availability.

If you are interested in serving as an LRE volunteer, and even if you have previously served as LRE volunteer, we are asking you to complete the new application to ensure our database is current with your continuing interest. Please click here to sign up as a volunteer for the Bar's classroom-based and adult non-profit organization-based Law Related Education programs.
