At the beginning of the meeting on Tuesday, November 17, the Mayor administered the oath of office to Police Officer Tanner Miller.
The City Council's work session on Race and Diversity held in August outlined five priority issues, with one of those issues being the formalization of Police Department standards. In an effort to move toward an Urbandale community that is more inclusive and accepting of all, a public hearing was held for the first reading of a new ordinance that would change the current Municipal Code to include the prohibition of biased based profiling. This policy is not new to the Urbandale Police Department, but due to current discussion on policing within Urbandale, the Des Moines metro, and the nation, it is the first policy the Police Department has recommended adding to the Urbandale Municipal Code.
The Council took two actions related to a potential new arena on the Urbandale side of Merle Hay Mall. The project would include a multi-purpose arena and a hotel. The Council approved a contract with a firm to conduct a feasibility and economic impact study for the project and an agreement related to legal work necessary to collaborate on the project with the City of Des Moines (the mall property is located in both cities). The Urbandale Fire Department continues to work and respond within the COVID guidelines. We are seeing COVID positive patients almost every day and our crews are doing a remarkable job caring for residents and keeping themselves safe. At the same time, we have curtailed most of our inspection and public education programs including CPR, First Aid, Fire Extinguisher training, car seat installs, smoke detector battery changes.
