Four IRC Scholarships to be awarded by NIRI Virtual
In an effort to help members round out their knowledge and skills, the NIRI Virtual Chapter (NIRI VC) will be offering FOUR Investor Relations Charter (IRCâ„¢) scholarships: one for the 2017 March testing window and three for the June testing window.

Any NIRI Virtual member can apply for the scholarship. You will be asked to provide eligibility for the IRC exam. To determine your eligibility for the IRC exam, please visit .

The first testing window is March 18-25, 2017. Due to the impending final application deadline of February 4, 2017 to apply for the IRC exam we are going to award this initial scholarship to the NIRI Virtual member who receives the highest score. Due to confidentiality rules associated with the IRC exam, VC test takers will need to fill out a form granting NIRI permission to share your test score with us to determine the winner.

The second testing window is June 10-17, 2017. All of those interested in applying for eligibility for the June testing period, will be asked to provide NIRI VC's Scholarship Committee no more than two type-written pages information regarding: current job role and background in IR or related fields, career goals (short-term or long-term), commitment to continuing education (other courses/seminars), involvement in NIRI, expected benefit from the IRC, and financial need (i.e. do you have access to company financial support).

Submissions for these three remaining scholarships are currently being accepted and are due by Monday, March 6, 2017. Please email your written application and submit any questions to NIRI Virtual's co-presidents, Tripp Sullivan: and Sheryl Joyce: .
If you are granted the scholarship and successfully pass the IRC exam, you will be reimbursed for the testing fee and cost of the book.

Getting to Know:

Mike McGuire
Vice President, Investor Relations

What led you to IR and where has it taken you?
I was recruited into the finance department of CVS upon earning my MBA. I learned a lot, serving in various financial roles within financial planning & analysis, strategic planning, store budgeting & reporting, and treasury & capital management over the course of five years in the finance group. At that time, our IR department consisted of only an IRO; she needed an IR analyst and she recruited me into that role. Our market cap was "just" $10 billion at that time and it has since grown to $90 billion over the past 15 years! We now have a department of five professionals, and could use more!
What has been the most exciting thing you have been involved with in your IR career?
CVS has been very acquisitive, and such transactions are always exciting as they give us the opportunity to update our messaging and develop relationships with new shareholders. The most exciting one occurred about ten years ago and was a transformative merger, combining the largest U.S. pharmacy benefits manager of equivalent market cap into CVS, the largest U.S. retail drugstore. From an IR perspective, we, a retailer, needed to convince the target's healthcare shareholders and analysts to support the transaction while also fending off an unsolicited bid from a competitor. We were successful, but over the ensuing years faced pressure to break up the Company as synergies weren't being realized as fast as the Street would have liked. Ultimately, this led to a change in our executive leadership team. That change brought further IR challenges in communicating revised expectations with the investment community. Since overcoming those hurdles, I'm very pleased to say that the resulting combination has been very successful and rewarding for shareholders.
What do you especially like about the IR role? What do you find most challenging? Most rewarding?
As people in similar capacities know, the IR role gives us a unique perspective on the company - we need to understand holistically the company's strategy, which I especially enjoy. I also like the variety, including opportunities to get out of the office and interact with investors and analysts in different settings.
Perhaps the most challenging aspect comes when educating various C-suite executives on the markets, given their various backgrounds and perspectives.
Since we are a pharmacy innovation company that strives to help people on their path to better health, the most rewarding aspect is reaching out to retail shareholders and listening to their stories of loyalty to CVS, based on their personal health experiences. They have an emotional bond to CVS, which is very comforting to hear.

Tell me about your involvement with NIRI generally, and the Virtual Chapter specifically, and what you get out of it.
Based in Rhode Island, I have been a member of NIRI Virtual since its inception. Previously, I had been a member of the Boston chapter but it wasn't geographically convenient for me to participate in their activities. I have found Virtual very conducive to my schedule, especially participation in the webinars. I have also attended the NIRI Annual Conference on occasion, presenting once on marketing to the retail investor. I have also benefited from NIRI training sessions, as have members of my staff.
Tell me a fun fact about yourself that not a lot of members know.
Before earning my MBA, I practiced as a registered architect for ten years!

Hi ghlight

Our job is to create that spark that makes a brand unique. Too many choose just good enough. But good enough does not inspire or move margins. Great organizations recognize the value of top talent and their ability to build a brand. Talent brings vision. We see beyond what has been done, to bring you something new, fresh and compelling. Not just to be different, but to differentiate, communicate more effectively, and create a memorable experience and impression.
The Pressley Johnson Design team has been helping investor relations professionals communicate with their constituents for three decades. Yes, we have seen great changes but the the desire to be seen and understood remains paramount. In the past award winning annual reports ruled our day - today websites, webinars and blogs lead the pack. And well-executed brand programs provide the foundation.
