Workplace Eye Safety and Wellness
Workplace eye injuries are unfortunately very common. More than 20,000 eye injuries happen every year. These injuries range from digital eye strain to serious eye trauma that can cause long term damage or loss.
Common causes of eye injury include but are not limited to: flying objects, particles, dust, debris, harmful radiation, or chemicals. However, eye injuries can occur in an office setting as well. For instance, office workers are prone to developing eye strain.
A minimum of 90 percent of eye injuries can be prevented by taking simple steps that combine common sense and workplace safety diligence.
Before starting work:
- Is there proper lighting? Will the work being done create the possibility of eye injury hazards?
- Is the eye protection provided enough for the hazards present?
During the work process:
- Is the eye protection being worn properly?
- Does it fully protect the worker?
- Is it comfortable for the worker?
An often-overlooked question when choosing eye protection and quite possibly the most important is: Will the employee wear it?
There is no one size fits all option when it comes to workplace eye wellness safety. Through proper Job Hazard Analysis, continued review of work processes and work environments many eye injuries can be prevented.
