Norfolk Receives Federal Funding to Increase Community Resilience to Flooding
On Wednesday, January 19, the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced its plan for investing the $14 billion from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to strengthen port and waterway supply chains and bolster climate resilience. In this plan, the City of Norfolk will receive $249,331,000 to increase community resilience to flooding. The city will use the funding for the design and construction of storm surge barriers, levees, and pump stations to reduce storm risk as part of a large-scale extension of the Downtown Norfolk Floodwall. The federal funding allocation is for developing complete plans and specifications for extension northwards to the Midtown Tunnel and west towards the Campostella Bridge as well as a floodgate at the Hague.
The City of Norfolk and the US Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District began the Norfolk Coastal Storm Risk Management Final Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Impact Statement in 2016, with the Chief of Engineer’s Report completed in February 2019. The project was authorized by congress in the bipartisan Water Resources Development Act of 2020.

Avoid Flooded Streets
Real-time flooding updates just got easier thanks to our partnership with RISE, climate tech FloodMapp and Waze! FloodMapp is testing the integration of their flood forecast technology with Waze’s navigation app here in Norfolk.
What’s this mean for Waze users? Drivers receive pop-up icons and audio alerts to warn them of flooded streets along their route – to help avoid property and life-threatening hazards. Drivers can also confirm flooding in the app with a “thumbs up” to help validate FloodMapp’s technology and improve the accuracy of future Waze alerts. Find out more.

The Street Where I Live
Through a series of oil paintings created during the pandemic lockdown, Jean Peacock expresses the joy and love of places lived, and people and things most cherished. Having the freedom to mix colors on her palette, with time at a standstill, made way for the discovery of new methods of bringing the canvas to life. With her four-legged companions faithfully by her side, now, more than ever, she discovered contentment in areas of home often taken for granted. A seat at the piano and books on the nightstand were viewed with delight. The backyard soon became her retreat. The Street Where I Live, is a lively portrayal of the beauty that’s all around us, if we just slow down and look.
