Five Tips for Nurturing Transformative Women Leaders

By Laura Peterson, Senior Managing Director and Office Managing Director - New York, Accenture

For nearly all of us, life has us wearing many hats in both our personal and professional lives. At Accenture, I serve in dual leadership roles – one, as Accenture’s Communications, Media, and Technology (CMT) business lead in the Northeast market unit, and two, as our office managing director for New York Metro where I lead our people, clients, and community-related efforts. In both instances, I’m accountable for our strategy, talent development, growth and delivery for our clients, while overseeing a combined workforce of more than 10,000 people. The best part of both hats is working with our amazingly talented teams and supporting them in fulfilling their true potential. In this, I’m incredibly committed to and passionate about putting diversity, equity, and inclusion at the heart of the way we work.

We consider a culture of equality critical to success at Accenture. It’s not only the right thing to do but a business imperative. For me, inclusion has always been at the heart of this principle. If people feel a sense of belonging, feel valued by their teams for their unique perspective and gifts, they will feel empowered to be courageously bold, creatively innovate more often and take risks. This is the kind of environment where everyone can and will rise. Our mission is highly aligned with that of The WICT Network in that we seek to develop women leaders who transform the industry. While there have been many discussions around women in leadership, the question persists: have we made enough progress?

2022 BMLI & BMGI Programs Convene for Three Days of Learning, Connection and Celebration in Atlanta

Earlier this month, The WICT Network hosted the Betsy Magness Graduate Institute (BMGI) and Leadership Institute (BMLI) in Atlanta. The opening reception was a momentous occasion as participants in BMLI Classes 46 and 47 were welcomed by The WICT Network community and graduates of the program. We also paid tribute to long-time BMLI program facilitator and faculty member Sara King, who retired this year.

"I want to give a shoutout to the women who started this program," Sara said of BMLI when invited to the podium for remarks, "because there's absolutely no other program like it that's so highly rated. That's so long-term. That has an alumnae offering that keeps people connected in such a meaningful way."

Throughout our careers, Sara said, we need to surround ourselves with cheerleaders who will encourage us in our pursuits, challengers who will push us to innovate, champions who will advocate for us even when we're not present in the room, and caretakers who will be there when we misstep or need help. BMLI and the graduate program connects you to a network of individuals who can and will do just that, she explained.

Sara was instrumental in helping create those strong bonds among participants, having served as BMLI faculty since its inception in 1994, "I got a lot more than I gave," she insisted. "I received everything back ten-fold, thank you."

Before stepping off the stage, Sara had one final call to action for Betsy Magness graduates and current participants: "I hope you'll continue to be cheerleaders, champions, caretakers and challengers, because the world needs us," she said.

The WICT Network has established a scholarship to honor Sara's legacy, which will be underwritten by the Women’s Leadership and Education Fund (WLEF) and conferred for the first time in 2024. Every dollar pledged will be matched by The WICT Network for future scholarships. Donate now >>

The gathering in Atlanta represented the second training for 2022-23 BMLI program participants. Both cohorts, Class 46 and 47, will conclude their program year in May 2023. Combined, this is the largest cohort of BMLI participants to date, with 58 women leaders represented. These distinguished women have already displayed exemplary leadership skills; the potential to excel in executive level positions; and the ability to mentor others. They are smart, strategic risk takers, and they each possess an openness to learn new ideas and a continued interest in growth opportunities. BMLI graduates return to their companies with enhanced leadership skills and a renewed vision of their strengths and goals – they serve as the next generation of executive leaders who will transform our industry.

The WICT Network is now accepting applications for the 2023-24 BMLI program!

The next BMLI application cycle is now open and will close February 1, 2023. Candidates must complete an online application and an approval form submitted to The WICT Network on behalf of their HR leader.
