SPECIALS SPOTLIGHT: READING

MMS faculty members were in the first group of educators in the nation to be trained in the latest edition of the Wilson Reading System. Alasha Al-Qudwah , Jennifer Carriger , Lindy Hoeft , Kathryn Rhoads and Darlene Spangler completed the intensive three day training this summer. Wilson is a multi-sensory, research-based reading and spelling program that supports students and adults with dyslexia and other learning differences. By participating in ongoing professional development opportunities, MMS faculty learn from and connect with national experts and peers and bring the latest research and best practices back to our classrooms.

The Wilson Reading system is offered as part of MMS Learning Services. All elementary students participate in twice-yearly academic screenings and receive additional support as needed from a team of professionals led by Jennifer Carriger, WV Learning Disabilities Association Teacher of the Year (2014) with Specialists Lindy Hoeft and Darlene Spangler. MMS is one of the few independent Montessori schools in the country to offer specialized learning services.

FACULTY FOCUS

Several new teachers and staff have joined the MMS education team in new or expanded roles this year. They include a PhD scientist, a graduate of the Sorbonne in Paris and an Eagle Scout! BOARD BIZ

Board members were elected at the MMS Annual Meeting earlier this fall. Please join us in congratulating new directors Mary Claire Davis, Jennifer Preston and April Taylor and returning director Hollie Hubbert. We also thank departing board members Holly Bailey, Abbey Fiorelli and Jack Rogers for their years of service to our school. Meet all of the MMS board members here.

The Board has been busy updating our " MMS@50" strategic plan to guide our school as we experience continued growth and move towards our 50th anniversary. An all-day retreat with consultant Peter Piche, held in late October, helped us identity opportunities and challenges and position MMS for a bright and strong future. Stay tuned!

"Spreading Our Wings,”  the 2017-18 Annual Report, is out! It highlights major milestones reached over the past year and a preview of what's ahead.

RACE FOR EDUCATION

Thank you to our students, families and community supporters - the 2018 Race for Education, Away We Go! , was a great success! So far, we have collected over $8,500 in race sponsorships. The Race for Education supports our Financial Aid program and allows for the purchase of Montessori materials for the classrooms.

Special thanks to Race for Education coordinator Diana Johnson , parents Ryan and Shelley Whittington and Club K-9 for our race t-shirts, and our friends at the University of Charleston for hosting the race on their beautiful lawn.

MMS YEARBOOK

The MMS yearbook has been discontinued this year. Although the book was very favorably received, sales were not sufficient to sustain a project of this magnitude. Parents may purchase books from prior years through TreeRing . As always, families are welcome to use any MMS photos posted on social media to create their own picture books for their children. Thanks to everyone who has supported and enjoyed the yearbook over the past three years!
