Then and Now...

My career in the trades runs from a time when nearly all work was done with hand tools to the way we work today with strong, cordless power tools for every task. Much of what I’ve learned was from my father and his father. I’ve bored holes in concrete with a 3 lb. hammer and star drill, dadoed door jambs with a hand saw and chisel, and trimmed numerous houses with that hand saw, a block plane, and a hammer... The good old days? Maybe, but I’ll stick with the modern conveniences such as one of the most significant additions to woodworking tools, the compound miter saw. Its combination of speed and precision can’t be matched by traditional hand tools.

Fastening something to concrete? Ditch the heavy hammer and star drill in favor of a rotary hammer to bore holes quickly and neatly. Pull the trigger and stop when the hole is deep enough. (It’s almost that simple.)

Need a large hole in wood? Instead of turning a brace and bit by hand, pull another trigger, this one on a cordless drill fit with a hole saw.

Time to nail it all up? Use one of the many types of nail guns and save your hammer for knocking things into position.

Of course, before any of that can be done, measurements will be needed. In my father’s time, he took them most often with a 6’ folding rule. Now, steel tapes as long as 35’ that clip on a tool belt do most of the work. In this case, though, I consider the modern tool to be an adjunct, not a replacement. I can’t do without my folder! Dad finally got a steel tape in the ‘80s when he saw how handy mine was.

There isn’t much that hasn’t seen improvements over the years, but there’s a pair in my shop that seems to have avoided evolution for well over 100 years; my slate bench and slate hammer. A quick survey of YouTube videos suggests that these tools are still commonly used for installing slate roofs. I got mine from a flea market prior to replacing a slate roof on Nantucket’s East Brick with my father John Van Lieu, Michael Phillips, and John Holland back in ’73.

Were they the old days or modern times?

Holiday Preparation

Whether you live on the island or will be spending Thanksgiving and Stroll Weekend in your vacation home, make it as comfortable and welcoming as possible. Imagine the parties and family get-togethers you’ll be hosting and make a list of things you need, from serving platters to extra seating. Do you have the right size tablecloth, enough placemats, and napkins (they don’t have to match), silverware, a turkey baster, glasses, candles and candlesticks, dishes, (all available in Housewares). Forget those flimsy aluminum roasting pans and buy an honest-to-goodness turkey pan you’ll use forever.  This is the time to go overboard and bring out all your good stuff! Reminder to pick up silver polish.

BULB PLANTING TIPS

  • Plant Spring bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, lilies, gladiolas, and crocus in Fall just before the ground freezes and while the soil is still workable.
  • Amend soil with compost material and high phosphorus fertilizer such as bone meal.
  • Bulbs thrive in well-draining soil. Adding rich organic compost material (such as Coast of Maine Lobster Compost) can improve soil drainage.
  • Planting depth varies by species, follow instructions on package.

Introducing our newest rug collection...

  • 100% Undyed British Wool
  • Fully Natural & Bio-Based
  • Non-Toxic & Zero Plastic
  • Cotton Warp & Jute Weft
  • Natural Rubber Latex Backing

The beauty of raw wool inspires each rug design.

Agnella by Britons is crafted using undyed wool of varying hues to celebrate this incredible natural material’s true colors. As well as being attractive to the eye, undyed wool is also kind to our environment, using less water during production and no chemical dyes.

Easy to maintain: The structure of wool naturally keeps dirt from sticking to the fiber and makes it easier to clean.

Excellent sound absorber: Wool rugs are excellent at absorbing sound and prevent it from travelling to the rooms below.

Naturally flame-retardant: Owing to the natural properties of the fiber, wool rugs are flame retardant. Wool self-extinguishes and does not melt.

All year-round comfort: A wool rug insulates cold floors in winter, increasing the feeling of warmth. In summer, it absorbs excess moisture from the air lowering the humidity in your home.

Sustainable: Wool fiber is 100% biodegradable and fully renewable making a wool rug an eco-friendlier option.

Naturally hypoallergenic: The surface of the wool fleece traps dust and other impurities which keeps them from spreading in the air, this makes wool naturally hypoallergenic and a great solution for people with asthma or allergies.
