Last month, we followed G. O. Carlson, Inc. through the 1970s and 1980s, a period marked by technical accomplishments, diversification and continued change. That chapter ended in 1991 with an acquisition that would significantly shape the future of the company.
G. O. Carlson, Inc. purchased Electralloy Corporation in Oil City, Pennsylvania, expanding the company beyond its traditional stainless steel plate business and into the melting and production of specialty and stainless steel alloys.
Electralloy produced a wide range of products, including forging quality ingot and billet, round bar, pig ingot for the investment casting industry, forged block, and weld wire for customers serving industries such as aerospace, defense, navy nuclear, and petrochemical. The acquisition gave G. O. Carlson new capabilities and provided the foundation for a period of substantial investment and modernization.
Electralloy also brought with it an important history of its own.
The company was known throughout the specialty metals industry for having the first commercialized Argon Oxygen Decarburization, or AOD, process. AOD refining had become an important technology in the production of stainless and specialty steels, allowing greater control over chemistry and quality. Following the acquisition, G. O. Carlson continued to invest in Electralloy’s capabilities.
One of the most significant steps came in 1998, when G. O. Carlson invested in a new remelt facility at the Oil City operation. The investment expanded Electralloy’s ability to serve demanding specialty alloy markets and proved successful enough that the remelt operation was doubled in size in 2004.
Those investments represented an important evolution for the company.
The business that began in 1936 by purchasing stainless steel ingots and arranging for their conversion into plate was now directly involved in melting, refining, remelting and producing specialty alloys for demanding applications.
ELECTRALLOY'S THOMAS BUCKLEY TO MAKE KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT SMR CONFERENCE
Thomas Buckley, Electralloy’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing, will be one of the keynote speakers at the upcoming SMR North American Stainless & Special Alloys Conference which is being held in Nashville November 5-6, 2026. This is the fifth edition of this must-attend industry event.
Buckley will share his observations on the current and future outlook of the stainless and nickel alloy market. Buckley will also participate in group discussion on the topic.
The conference, which is organized by SMR Events in cooperation with World Steel Dynamics, brings together decisionmakers from across the stainless steel and special alloys supply chain to exchange market intelligence, discuss the North American and global outlook, and address the issues shaping the business in 2026 and beyond.
The 2025 conference set a new benchmark with around 350 delegates from 165 companies and is expected to have another great turnout this year.
Electralloy specializes in the manufacture of stainless steel, nickel alloys, copper-nickel alloys, and high temperature alloys in the form of ingot, billlet, slabs, bar, plate, coil, rod, weld wire and remelt pigs.
ELECTRALLOY EARNS GE GT193 CERTIFICATION
Approved for S-Spec-35 (S400) Codes
On October 9, 2026, Electralloy received its GE Aerospace S-SPEC-35 (S-400) approval for the following test codes in Chemical Testing: AI3F, AI6F, AI1G, AI3G, AI4G & AI5G.
This accreditation increases the range of customer bases that the Electralloy Chemical Laboratory can serve, adding to its current Nadcap, ISO 17025 and Pratt & Whitney approvals.
This new certification is in addition to Electralloy’s GE Aerospace 04 Systems Audit approval that the corporation has maintained for more than a decade. The 04 Process Code approval fulfills the rigorous requirements of GE Aerospace quality specifications (specifically S-SPEC-1 (S-1000) and AS9100D).
Electralloy’s S-SPEC-35 (S-400) approval is initially valid through October 31, 2027, and falls under GE Supplier Code T9274.
The 04 Process Code approval under supplier codes T9273 and T9274 covers both of Electralloy’s specialized metal processing and manufacturing setups. The current certification cycle for this vendor code is valid through May 31, 2028.
Electralloy is qualified to supply raw materials directly into the GE Aerospace supply chain.
