Hispanic Heritage Month Highlight - Albert Vinicio Baez

Albert Vinicio Baez was a physicist known for his pioneering contributions to X-ray optics and X-ray microscopy. Baez was born in Mexico in 1912 and moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was two years old. He started his career in mathematics and earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in mathematics. Later he earned his Ph.D. in physics at Stanford University for his dissertation work on “Principles of X-Ray Optics and the Development of a Single Stage X-Ray Microscope.” Since X-rays cannot be focused by traditional lenses, he and his research mentor, Paul Kirkpatrick, devised a focusing geometry where they used a complicated system of grazing-incidence mirrors to focus X-rays.

These Kirkpatrick-Baez mirrors are still used in modern X-ray microscopy. In addition to being a pioneer in developing X-ray optics, he was also known for his humanitarian work and was involved in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). While working with this program he spent a year in Baghdad teaching introductory physics, which he and his wife wrote about in their book, A Year in Baghdad. During his work with UNESCO he also served as the first director of the science education program, where he worked to improve science education in Latin America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
