| | Construction Begins on New Long-Term Care Facility in Lantzville | |
The District of Lantzville is celebrating the start of construction on Island Health's new long-term care facility which is being built in partnership with the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District (NRHD) and the Province of BC. A ground-breaking ceremony hosted by the Province was held on September 21, 2026.
The new six-storey facility will provide 298 long-term care beds, including an 18-bed hospice unit, which is expected to improve access to seniors' care services across the region and alleviate pressure on local hospitals.
Some of the features of the facility include private rooms with ensuite bathrooms, communal dining, lounge and recreation spaces, self-serve refreshments, a hair salon, indoor and outdoor event spaces, walking paths, an adult day program and a childcare centre.
The new building will sit on an 8.25 acre property located at 6910 Lantzville Road. You may have noticed recent construction at the corner of Dickinson Road and Schook Road to facilitate the extension of the sewer line for the new facility. Construction will be ongoing at the project site with the facility expected to open in 2029.

CURBSIDE VOTING: The District of Lantzville will be providing Curbside Voting as needed on polling days, which means you can pull up outside Costin Hall and request that an election official administer voting while you remain in your vehicle. Additional forms, identification, or a solemn declaration may be required before you qualify to receive a mail ballot package. For mail ballots to be sent by mail, applications must be received prior to 9am, on Tuesday, October 6. Mail ballot requests received after the mailing deadline will be available for pickup at the Municipal Hall until Friday, October 16, 2026. Please submit your applications early to allow for sufficient processing time. | Fire Prevention Week Focuses on Safe Charging & Lithium-ion Battery Tips | |
Fire Prevention Week is a nationwide event, running from October 4 to 10, 2026, that encourages Canadians to take the time to learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. This year's theme "Charge into Fire Safety" focuses on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires.
Tips for using lithium-ion batteries include:
-
Buy only listed products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery, look for a Canadian safety certification mark such as cUL, cETL or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.
-
Charge devices safely. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new charges from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard service. Don't overcharge your device. Unplug or remove the battery when it is fully charged.
-
Recycle batteries responsibly. Do not throw lithium-ion, or any battery, into garbage or recycling bins. Visit call2recycle.ca to find a recycling location near you.
-
Charge tools and rides outside. Charge items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible.
For more information about Fire Prevention Week and battery safety tips, visit the National Fire Prevention Association's main page here.
