Where Are They Now?
Meet Shelby!
Shelby Houston is a former Mount View Boys & Girls Club staff member. When Shelby applied for a job with the Mount View Club she hoped to get good experience and be a role model for Club members while pursuing a degree in education.

"I wanted to work for the Boys & Girls Clubs to have the opportunity to work with local youth and practice the teaching skills I was learning while attending school. I could not have asked for a better place to give me such an incredible experience!" said Houston.
Shelby is now employed with Omaha Public Schools at Mount View Elementary and Belle Ryan Elementary Schools as a Physical Education teacher. Houston thinks it was a smooth transition into her new position because of the skills she acquired while working at the Club.

"Working at Boys & Girls Club was the most impactful and influential experience that has led me to be the teacher I am today. I learned first-hand the importance of building positive relationships with students and how that creates a welcoming and safe space for youth to grow. Without my experience at Boys & Girls Club, I would not feel as prepared as I did to take on my role as a full-time teacher".

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands Club staff are top-notch and we feel lucky to have had Shelby at our Mount View Club! When we asked Shelby if there's anything she misses about her time with the Clubs, she had this to say:

"I miss the students, but I am so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to teach at Mount View Elementary. Therefore, I still get to see my Mount View Club kids at school for PE class! I also miss my co-workers. We still talk frequently, but I miss the camaraderie we built together at Club. Thankfully, I am not too far away (just down the stairs)!"

Thank you for your time at Mount View Boys & Girls Clubs Shelby! To all our Club Staff past, present and future, thank you for the work you do to provide local youth with a fun, safe place to go after school and for making a difference in your community.

Even during these difficult times, Toryeon has manged to maintain a bright smile beneath his mask and keep his peers laughing.

When asked how he is getting used to online learning, Toryeon had this to say:

“VOICE is different but fun. I like the activities and the rewards. I also enjoy the different word puzzles they’re my favorite.”
