DEA National Drug Takeback Day
The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat. DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day reflects DEA’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.
Amberley Village is committed to making our community safer and healthier by partnering with the DEA. Hamilton County Heroin Task Force and the Hamilton County Quick Response Unit to support reducing overdoses and overdose deaths. While the community does its part to turn in unneeded medications and remove them from potential harm, we are doing our part to further reduce drug-related violence.

Human Rights Commission Seat Open
Amberley Village wishes to thank James Boney for his service to the Human Rights Commission since it was originally established in April of 2018. He most recently served as Chair of the Commission, and has helped to guide its initiatives, including a non-discrimination ordinance, a "welcome" yard sign, and a land acknowledgment statement.
Following Mr. Boney's recent resignation, Amberley Village is currently seeking a resident to fill an open seat on the Amberley Village Human Rights Commission.
The position is open to residents of Amberley Village, and applications are being accepted through October 27, 2023. If you or someone you know is interested in filling this open seat,
please visit the Village website for additional information, and complete the online form. Applications should be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27, 2023

Under One Roof Exhibit at JCC
Amberley Village Submission from Ice Cream Social on Display!
| |
|
To celebrate the holiday of Sukkot, the Mayerson JCC constructs a community sukkah every year and invites organizations, community groups and individuals to help decorate the large structure with their artistic interpretations and contributions to community conversation. This tradition began in 2013 and each year represents a specific theme that organizations and individuals can relate to and appreciate through art.
The Human Rights Commission, which is comprised of five volunteers who are residents of Amberley Village, hosted a collaborative submission with Village residents at the annual summer Ice Cream Social. Each leaf represents a person's thoughts and dreams for our community, including both unique dreams and some shared by many. The Kickoff Reception will be held October 5 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the JCC. Registration and details are available via the links below.

New Ohio Cell Phone Law is Now Enforceable by Citation
|
In April of 2023, the State of Ohio passed a law prohibiting driver interaction with cell phones. Beginning October 5, law enforcement officers are officially authorized to issue citations for violating the new law.
Be sure you understand the rules in their entirety, as fines begin at $150 and can cost you 2 points on your driver's license for a first offense, and can even result in a possible driver license suspension for repeat offenders. Check out the Ohio Department of Public Safety website via the button below for full details, and drive safe, Amberley Village!

Indigenous People to be Recognized at Upcoming Council Meeting
Amberley Village will once again recognize Indigenous Peoples at the October 9 meeting of Council at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers.
The Shawnee and Myaamia (Miami) tribes were the original inhabitants of the land, and are recognized once annually at Council, and via a permanent link on the Village website.
In 2021, Amberley Village Council approved Resolution 2021-30, which was initiated by the Village Human Rights Commission to adopt a Land Acknowledgement Statement. The legislation establishes that the Statement will be recited alongside the Pledge of Allegiance annually at the October Council meeting, which coincides with the observance of Indigenous Peoples Day. The Statement is also permanently affixed to the wall just outside Council Chambers, as well as linked to the landing page of the Amberley Village website (see below). The Acknowledgement Statement reads as follows:
"As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with those Indigenous Peoples who were affected most by colonization and broken treaties, we acknowledge the traditional Shawnee and Myaamia (Miami) lands on which we now stand, and on which the Village of Amberley was built."

Amberley Green Prairie Garden Update
Efforts to begin the Amberley Green Prairie Garden have begun! Thanks to grants from Duke Energy and Hamilton County Public Health, Amberley Green is working in partnership with the Cincinnati Nature Center to transform six acres at Amberley Green into a Prairie Garden (see map below).
Staff from the Cincinnati Nature Center recently applied an herbicide to the area just south of the Community Garden to prepare the space for the transformation. Walkers and pets are asked to keep off the grass in this area, and signs are posted to indicate where the herbicide has been applied.
The project will include several seating areas and spaces for memorial trees, and is intended to enhance the connection between residents and nature, as well as attract essential pollinators, which is excellent for the environment.
Stay tuned for more info and photos as the project progresses!

Fire Prevention Week is October 8-14, 2023
Cooking is such a routine activity that it's easy to forget the high temperatures can easily start a fire. Cooking causes an average of 172,900 reported home structure fires per year (49 percent of all reported home fires in the US). Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and casualties.
In 2021, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated 170,000 home cooking fires. These fires caused an estimated 135 deaths, 3,000 injuries, and over $494 million in property loss. With peak days for home cooking fires occurring on Thanksgiving and Christmas, Amberley Village Fire Department reminds residents to make checking your fire extinguisher part of your regular holiday preparations.

Our October banner campaign (pictured above) highlights two timely topics this month. The first is a reminder of the newly-enforceable "Phones Down" laws that apply to all motorists in the State of Ohio. The second message emphasizes the importance of fire safety in the kitchen as we recognize Fire Prevention Week just before the onset of the holiday season (see stories above for more information and links.)

Amberley Village is committed to keeping lines of communication open and accessible between residents and government officials. In this spirit, Amberley Village has incorporated Village-issued email addresses for Councilmembers into its digital communications protocol.
These measures unify the format, making it easier for residents to send a message when an issue comes to mind. The member's first initial followed by last name (no space) @amberleyvillage.org will get your message on its way to members of the Amberley Village Council.
