Update from the President & CEO:

Friends of the Gateway Region,

Great things continue to happen with infrastructure upgrades in our region, including recent work with Petersburg’s Poor Creek service area. With federal, state and local government leaders listening to industry needs and collaborating on a solution, this investment in water systems will support the current pharma cluster in Petersburg and create opportunities for other city properties. Even more exciting is that pump capacity can be scaled for growth and will provide local sustainability.

We’re sending a warm welcome to Will Clements, president and CEO of The Bank of Southside Virginia, who is joining as a new VGR Advisory Board member. We look forward to his insights as a both long-term resident and business leader.

Coming into the fourth quarter of 2024, the volume of prospects considering opportunities in our region is running ahead of last year’s pace. On top of that, we see a lot of other activity this fall, with several international and domestic trade shows and prospect call trips on our calendars.

As we attract more interest in the Gateway Region, we’re delighted that the soon-to-reopen Hotel Petersburg will serve as a great resource for hosting site visitors. If you’re interested in a sneak preview of this renovated historic hotel, check out the news below and get your tickets before they’re gone!

$10 Million Biochar Production Facility Opens in Sussex County

Restoration Bioproducts recently celebrated the opening of its new biochar production facility in Sussex County. At the Waverly site, the company heats low-value biomass, agricultural and forestry waste to a very high temperature without oxygen to produce biochar and syngas, which can be burned to run the system or produce power. The resulting high-quality biochar can be added to soil to boost fertility, yield and water retention.

VEDP Colleagues Take Mini-Tour of Gateway Region

VEDP colleagues took a mini-tour earlier this month: Jake Phillips (VEDP), Tom Scott (VGR), Keith Boswell (VGR), Turner Widgen (VEDP), Gabby Dean (VEDP), Star Cranston (VEDP) and Stacey English (Dinwiddie County).

Last month, our colleagues from the Virginia Economic Development Partnership joined us for a mini-tour of the Gateway Region, including a stop at the Dominion Energy's Locks Campus in Dinwiddie County for a sneak peek at the new High Voltage Laboratory. Once opened later this year, the lab will provide a safe, energized environment for testing new equipment before it's installed on the electric transmission grid. Big gains from this cutting-edge addition include facilitating the development of emerging technologies and improving grid reliability through smart, research-based investments.
