Dear Members,
It’s hard to believe it was just a few short weeks ago we were gathered together in St. Louis for NCADV’s 20th national conference on domestic violence, but that’s what my calendar is telling me! Recognizing (Y)Our Resilience attracted over 600 advocates, survivors and others for 37 workshops, 6 intensives, 2 plenaries, and one keynote address from the inspiring Tommi Vincent.
Of course, perhaps the MOST exciting moment arrived right after Tommi’s inspiring keynote address, which was when I was joined by Katie Ray-Jones of the National Domestic Violence Hotline to announce the formation of Project Opal, a joining of our two organizations to better serve survivors and their advocates. In case you missed the announcement, here’s some information about Project Opal. Never before have two national large DV organizations joined together in this way. We are excited for the future and we want you to be on this journey with us.
As you also know, it is only days away from Domestic Violence Awareness month! Later in this newsletter you will find a link to sign up for the toolkit. We hope that you find it helpful (you have so much to do!) and useful (good information particularly for those that you might want to educate.
I would also like to let you know that we will be taking a brief hiatus from M-Power. As we work through the internal and external demands and changes of Project Opal, which includes enhancing your membership experience, we ask for your patience. We also want to extend our sincere gratitude and understanding about the delay in getting this edition out to you!
I wish you all the best for October and we will be in touch again very soon!
Best, and Be Safe,

Top Three from D.C.: The Big Policy Takeaways This Month
|
|
1) Continuing Resolution to Fund Federal Government
Congress returned briefly to pass a short-term continuing resolution to fund the Federal government until mid-December. They are currently recessed until after the election, at which time they will have to pass another spending bill. While we hope they pass a funding bill for all of Fiscal Year 2023, they may pass another continuing resolution and punt decisions about spending until the next Congress.
2) Family Violence Prevention and Services Act
We continue to urge the Senate to pass S.1275, the Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act, which reauthorizes and strengthens the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA). We will be holding #FVPSAFriday days of action every Friday during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, plus a post-election push on November 14. Please help us get FVPSA across the finish line! The action alert and toolkit can be found here.
3) Inflation Reduction Act of 2022
Congress cut its August recess short to pass the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) through reconciliation, which allowed them to circumvent the filibuster. The IRA is the final iteration of what was originally the sweeping Build Back Better economic package that would have transformed American society by addressing child poverty, increasing access to early childhood and post-secondary education, providing paid family leave, expanding healthcare access, and combatting climate change. The IRA is much more narrow, and focuses on reducing the federal deficit, cutting the cost of prescription drugs for seniors enrolled in Medicare, extending Affordable Care Act subsidies, investing in green energy, increasing fossil fuel production, and mitigating some of the impacts of climate change. A summary of the IRA can be found here. President Biden signed the IRA into law on August 16.

OhanaLink Technologies™ announced the launch of a new customized mobile solution, OhanaLink Purple™, designed to enhance services for domestic violence agencies and the clients they serve.
OhanaLink Technologies, a woman-owned technology development company based in Hermitage, Pennsylvania, is leading the way and bridging the gap in providing secure communication channels for domestic violence victims and community-based agencies that offer services to victims. The COVID-19 pandemic shed further light on the overwhelming need for better communication channels between community-based agencies providing victims' services. In 2021, the company entered into a collaboration with a coalition of work domestic violence agencies in Western Pennsylvania to ensure the tool would meet their needs and the needs of their clients.
Through this collaboration, OhanaLink Purple™—a first-in-the-market cloud-based delivery system for better coordination and communication for agencies, victims, and family members—was developed.
A true game-changer best describes OhanaLink Purple as it enhances domestic violence agencies’ delivery of services by providing them with the tools to safely improve communication and expand secure access to resources for victims. OhanaLink Purple is delivered through a concealed mobile app with proprietary Trackless Safety Features™ that can be used on smartphones or tablets to provide a safe, private mobile communication and support tool.
The mobile app is free for a domestic violence agency’s client to use.
