The Power of Manufacturing: From Our Nation’s Backbone to San Leandro’s Future
Manufacturing has long been the backbone of the American economy — driving innovation, creating good-paying jobs, and building the products that power our daily lives. From the earliest industrial workshops to today’s cutting-edge facilities producing everything from food to clean energy solutions, the manufacturing sector continues to define our country’s strength and resilience.
Here in San Leandro, manufacturing isn’t just part of our history — it’s part of our identity. For more than a century, our city has been home to makers, builders, and innovators who have shaped both local and national industries. Companies like Caterpillar once laid the foundation for large-scale industrial production here, while the automobile manufacturers that operated in what is now Gate 510 helped establish San Leandro as a hub of ingenuity and craftsmanship.
Today, that legacy continues through a new generation of advanced manufacturers who are reimagining what’s possible. From food and beverage leaders like Torani, to pioneers in battery technology, precision engineering, and sustainable production, San Leandro’s manufacturers are blending tradition with technology to create high-quality products and meaningful careers.
Manufacturing in San Leandro fuels our local economy, supports thousands of jobs, and fosters innovation that reaches far beyond city limits. As the industry evolves, so does our community — proving that the spirit of making, building, and improving remains stronger than ever. As we celebrate National Manufacturing Month, we honor the past, present, and future of manufacturing — in San Leandro and across the nation. Together, we continue to build what’s next.

Celebrating National Manufacturing Day in San Leandro
National Manufacturing Day was one to remember!
We kicked off the morning with First Friday: Open for Business at Torani, our host for the October networking event. Over 30 attendees enjoyed learning about Torani’s rich history, touring their impressive manufacturing floor, and even stepping inside their fun (and secret!) speakeasy room. Attendees also heard from Torani’s CEO, who shared exciting news — the company will be expanding again in the coming year and adding 100 new jobs right here in San Leandro!
Meanwhile, more than 300 students participated in career exposure tours, gaining a first-hand look at local manufacturing and engineering opportunities. The tours featured ACCO Engineered Systems, Scandic Springs, and Torani, giving students a real-world view of modern manufacturing careers. Afterward, students visited Chabot College, where they explored programs in manufacturing, welding, and other technical fields that can help launch their future careers.
|
The day wrapped up with a Manufacturing Industry Mixer at Drake’s Barrel House, where manufacturing professionals and industry partners connected over drinks and shared insights about their work.
Guests received a complimentary drink ticket and an exclusive Manufacturing Day t-shirt, a local collaboration with The Dro Clothing Company—a great local brand worth checking out!
Every year, National Manufacturing Day is celebrated on the first Friday in October across the country. We’re proud of our San Leandro manufacturers and the vital role they play in our community’s economy and innovation. We look forward to celebrating them again next year!

Exploring Pathways into the Trades:
“Careers without College” Workshop Inspires Youth to understand trade pathways during National Manufacturing Month
In celebration of National Manufacturing Month, the San Leandro Chamber of Commerce partnered with the San Leandro Public Library’s Teen Programs to host a dynamic workshop connecting youth and families to real-world careers in the skilled trades.
More than 80 young people and families registered and attended the event to learn directly from local professionals representing a range of industries, including construction, electrical work, manufacturing, and automotive technology.
The panel featured:
- Machine Technician, Torani
- Owner and Automotive Educator, Doral’s Auto Repair
- Construction Field Operations Manager, Eric Anderson Inc.
- Office Manager, Alameda County Electrical JATC
Panelists shared their personal career journeys and emphasized that there is no single path into the trades. Some entered through on-the-job training or union apprenticeship programs, while others discovered opportunities through staffing agency placements or by simply demonstrating a willingness to learn technical skills.
Attendees were eager to ask questions—ranging from how to get started and what courses to take or grades needed, to how trade unions work and what earning potential looks like in each field. The discussion underscored the importance of making information about trade careers more accessible to youth and their families.
Based on the enthusiastic participation and feedback, we plan to bring this panel back next year as part of National Manufacturing Month to continue highlighting hands-on, high-demand career opportunities in the skilled trades.
