Milestones & Memories...

When The Garden Shop at Marine opened in 1966, it heralded in the naming of all the departments as different shops. There was The Housewares Shop, The Bed & Bath Shop,The Paint Shop and The Tool House. Not shown here, there was also The Wine and Cheese Shop and the Fish Shop. These were located to the left of the Decorating Shop, now Home Furnishings.

Housewares and Bed & Bath were originally located in the main building where the Marine Supplies and bolts and fasteners are now located. Where Bed & Bath is now, to the right of Housewares, were a series of other businesses, such as a women’s clothing store and a hairdresser.

Along the brick walkway in front of those shops led to two more in the rear of the building where Housewares and Electrical are located now which were a Television and Electronics Sales and Repair Shop and the local cable access TV station

BULB PLANTING TIPS

  • Plant Spring bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinth, lilies, gladiolas, and crocus in Fall just before the ground freezes and while the soil is still workable
  • Amend soil with compost material and high phosphorus fertilizer such as bone meal
  • Bulbs thrive in well-draining soil. Adding rich organic compost material (such as Coast of Maine Lobster Compost) can improve soil drainage.
  • Planting depth varies by species, follow instructions on package.

October: A Transition Month

Picture: Leslie Linsley Enterprises

In October of 1492 Columbus “sailed the ocean blue” and discovered America. But it took until 1971 for Columbus Day to become a federal legal holiday, now celebrated on the second Monday of October. This is also the month of goblins and witches and all things Halloween and the month when we still hope for one more beach day before putting summer things away. Get a head start on the cool days ahead by organizing a “to do list” for when you’re ready.
