The Nature of Change
By Nisia Patalan
|
Change is inevitable.
Change can be evolutionary or revolutionary.
Change can be positive or negative.
Change is everywhere.
These generalizations, along with the concept of change, have guided many discussions throughout my 26 years in education. For gifted individuals, who may experience heightened emotional sensitivity, change can inspire creativity but also provoke worry or anxiety. To better adapt to the rapid changes happening all around us, embracing flexibility and viewing change as an opportunity for growth can help manage fear and uncertainty. Identify aspects of the change that you can influence, and concentrate your efforts there.

Call To Action
By Lisa Sticca-Conrod

This is a busy time of year for parents and educators alike. Autumn is brimming with things like the new school year, classes and teachers and friends, new activities, new opportunities, etc. For many of us, it also signals a physical change in season, where changing leaves and colder weather bring fall fun like apple picking, pumpkin carving, family Thanksgiving celebrations, and Halloween festivities. The last of these, Halloween, is almost upon us – and for many, it invites the best of creativity. This is often most evident in our gifted population, whose creativity is often tied inextricably with their talents and their passions. I love seeing gifted kids express themselves while having fun, and Halloween is often a chance to do just that.

| |
|
Teaching is often cited as one of the most stressful occupations (Oberle et al., 2020). Rates of stress, an individual’s reaction to situations where their resources are threatened, and burnout, the emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment that arise due to consistent vocational stressors, have remained high since the COVID-19 pandemic began. During the pandemic, 40% of district gifted education coordinators surveyed in one study reported feeling an increase in job-related stress, and 60% of participants stated that they had considered leaving their job or retiring early as a result (Guilbault & Caroleo, 2023).
