Sport History Spotlight: Equitation Fun Facts
Did you know that the Adrian Van Sinderen Memorial Trophy, awarded to the winner of USEF Hunter Seat Medal Final, started out in 1937 as a year-end trophy awarded to the highest point rider who competed with hunter seat, saddle seat, and stock seat riders in the same equitation classes? Show Jumping Hall of Famer Bill Steinkraus won the trophy in 1940 at age 15. The next year, Steinkraus won both the Good Hands Cup for saddle seat riders and the ASPCA Maclay Final.

In 1948, recognizing that judges had difficulty pinning classes with riders from different disciplines, and riding styles were becoming more specialized, Mr. Van Sinderen donated two more trophies and set up separate hunt seat, saddle seat, and stock seat finals as we see today.
