OCTOBER, 2026

Cranberry Proclamation

Once again, the Healey-Driscoll administration selected an A.D. Makepeace Company cranberry bog in which to celebrate the designation of October as official Massachusetts Cranberry Month.

Governor Maura Healey’s proclamation honors the state’s official berry and the many multi-generational farming families that grow it. To mark the occasion and the beginning of the annual harvest, Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) Commissioner Ashley Randle gathered with state and local officials and industry advocates from Massachusetts Cranberries in one of our bogs, to showcase regional growers and urge residents and visitors alike to choose Massachusetts grown cranberry products this fall.

“Cranberry growers are such an important part of our economy and a proud part of Massachusetts’ agricultural identity,” said Governor Healey. “For generations, cranberry farmers have supported local jobs, strengthened communities and helped make Massachusetts agriculture known around the world. During Massachusetts Cranberry Month, we’re proud to celebrate the farmers and families behind this iconic crop and continue supporting a strong agricultural economy across our state.”

Harvest is Underway

As autumn settles into southeastern Massachusetts, the region’s back roads offer a familiar and beautiful sight: cranberry bogs alive with harvest activity, framed by vibrant fall foliage and crisp blue skies. This seasonal tradition has become one of New England’s most recognizable scenes.

At the A.D. Makepeace Company, we will harvest over 1,700 acres of cranberry bogs across Plymouth County in seven short weeks.

As a founding member of the Ocean Spray Cooperative, A.D. Makepeace delivers its entire cranberry harvest to Ocean Spray’s receiving station in Carver, MA, where the fruit is cleaned, processed, and prepared for market. Our President and CEO, James F. Kane, also serves on Ocean Spray’s Board of Directors, helping support the cooperative’s continued success and the interests of its grower-members.

Looking to catch a harvest in action? The Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association shares seasonal activities and viewing opportunities on its website. You may also find a downloadable trail map that shows areas you are likely to see a harvest during the season. Throughout the harvest season, updates on safe, viewable harvest locations on A.D. Makepeace property will be posted at Makepeace Farms, when available.

Grumpy's Cranberry Harvest 5K

Join us for the 14th annual Grumpy's Cranberry Harvest 5K on October 31st!

Who was 'Grumpy' anyway? Perhaps you’ve admired the stunning nature photos displayed at the Meeting House at Redbrook in Plymouth or the Southcoast Health building at 100 Rosebrook Way in Wareham. Those images were the work of the late Bob (Grumpy) Conway, a long-time A.D. Makepeace Company employee whose love of the outdoors continues to inspire our community.

Perhaps you know a local high school student who has benefited from one of the more than $40,000 in scholarships awarded by the Cranberry Educational Foundation since the Grumpy 5K began.

The fundraising 5K takes place on October 31, and you can be part of it! Register to run or walk, or sign up to sponsor and help make it all happen.
