ORCAS ISLAND GARDEN CLUB PRESENTATION
(Wednesday, October 17, 10:00 am @ Orcas Center)
The Orcas Island Garden Club welcomes Ryan T. Palmateer from the San Juan Islands Conservation District. Ryan will speak about creating your own rain garden and drip irrigation system. He will also discuss county-wide water conservation efforts. Ryan is the San Juan Islands Conservation District Energy Program Manager and IT specialist as well as the Washington Association of District Employee's track leader for climate, water and energy. The Orcas Island Garden Club welcomes new members. After the presentation,visitors are encouraged to stop by our membership table and become a member of the garden club. 



FLOATING UKULELE JAM!

It's time for the Third Thursday Floating Ukulele Jam! Bring your uke, your friends, and some songs to share and join us on the interisland ferry on Thursday, October 18th: departs Friday Harbor at 5:45 pm, Orcas at 6:45 pm, Shaw at 7:00 pm, swings over to Lopez at 7:20 pm, then back home again. Everyone invited to play, sing, or just listen and enjoy the scenery - please help spread the word throughout the county! 

BRITNEE KELLOGG LIVE IN LOCAL BENEFIT CONCERT
(Friday, October 19, 7:00 pm @ Orcas Center)
Featuring Orcas Island's Malia Michelle!   Britnee and Malia will be coming to the Orcas Center to help raise money for the local community. Britnee  brings her Country flair of music to the Island to help out a local family battling cancer in addition to supporting the Arts community on the Island, including MAG (Music Advocacy Group) and the Orcas Center.  Britnee and Malia will be hosting children in grades K-12 from 5:00 pm-6:00 pm (prior to the concert) for a free meet and greet, along with some helpful insights to performing and the singing industry! The live performances will start at 7:00 pm w/ Malia and followed up by Britnee. We will have some food available prior to the concert and please feel free to make donations, as all of the proceeds will be given out to the local Organizations.  Kevin White will be hosting this event to support the local community.

BOO-SEUM AT ORCAS ISLAND HISTORICAL MUSEUM

Come to the Historical Museum for an afternoon of fun at the 
BOO-SEUM! You can take a free tour of the six homestead cabins under one roof and visit one room where you can watch historical (actually hysterical) black and white zombie horror movies! CAMP ORKILA's FALL FESTIVAL 
(Saturday-Sunday, October 27-28 @ Camp Orkila)
Super Spooky Haunted Hay Ride **  is  Saturday, October 27 at 7:00-8:45 pm.  Recommended only for older children and adults. Come take a ride on our legendary, fear-inducing, Haunted Hay Ride, leaving every 20 minutes from Camp Orkila's Pond area.
Fall Festival is Sunday, October 28, 1:00 -5:30 pm.  Join us for this free event full of adventure and food!!  We'll have hot dogs, soup, chili and cider to warm you up.  Participate in pumpkin carving, cider-pressing, face painting, archery, climbing at the Climbing Tower, games, fun hay ride, zip lining, and much more!   **note that the haunted hay ride is Saturday evening.

ISLAND HOPPIN' BREWERY HOSTS "BEER AND CONVERSATION"
(Friday, October 12, 5:00 pm @ Island Hoppin' Brewery)
The lack of affordable housing, including rentals, is a problem in San Juan County.  Come learn about a solution.  Island Hoppin' Brewery is hosting "Beer and Conversation" on Friday, October 12. This is your chance to find out more about the Home Fund measure on this November's ballot.  Bring your questions and bring your friends! Island Hoppin' supports this important initiative. We know first hand how difficult it is for workers to time safe, stable, affordable housing.  Oh, and did we mention? The first round of beer is on Janet. (Who's Janet? You'll have to show up to find out.) Please join us for this informative and fun event.  And if you cannot make it on October 12, there will be also be an informational Town Hall the next day Saturday, October 13, 3:00 pm at the Eastsound Fire hall . No matter which you choose, we hope you'll attend one to learn more about this important ballot measure.

YES FOR HOMES TOWN HALL

Yes for Homes is a county-wide, grassroots campaign to provide affordable housing in San Juan County. It will be Prop. 1 on the November ballot.  Ryan Page, San Juan County's Affordable Housing Coordinator, will be present to discuss the technical aspects of the Home Fund.  Representatives with the  Yes For Homes  campaign will be there to answer your questions.  We hope you will attend to find out more about this critically important ballot measure.

MASTER GARDENERS ANNUAL GARDENING WORKSHOP
(Saturday, October 20, 8:30 am - 4:00 pm @ Friday Harbor Middle School, San Juan Island)
Join keynote speaker Lorene Forkner Edwards and the San Juan County Master Gardeners at their popular Annual Gardening Workshop for inspiration and "Operating Instructions For a Garden That Fits YOU." Lorene Edwards  Forkner is an author, editor, and passionate self-proclaimed 'horticolorist,' the author of five gardening titles and the editor of Pacific Horticulture. The workshop is a day-long event, with noted authorities speaking on a wide variety of topics of interest to PNW coastal gardeners. Tickets are $40 online, $45 at the door. FRIENDS OF THE ORCAS ISLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNUAL MEETING
(Sunday, October 21, 1:00 pm-3:00 pm @ Outlook Inn)
At the annual meeting we will be electing new members to the Board of Directors. In addition, we will pass on reports of the last fiscal year including results from fundraising events, as well as thanking the community for its continued support in volunteering, attending fundraising activities, and membership in the non-profit organization.  The topic of the guest speaker, Bob Dash, is  On An Acre Shy of Eternity--and Beyond. Bob will present slides and dialog about his book On An Acre Shy of Eternity: Micro Landscapes at the Edge. Dash, a photographer, local teacher and environmental artist, portrays the phenomenally small elements of life. Dash's work has attracted international attention for his intricate photographs of microscopic life. Members of the community are invited to join this free event. 



BECOME A WSU MASTER GARDENER 
(Applications due Thursday, November 1)
Volunteer trainees receive over 60 hours of training, both in the classroom and on-line. The training is taught by local and regional experts and includes topics on vegetable gardening, soils, plant disease diagnostics, plant identification and more! In the first year, trainees are mentored by a cohort of veteran Master Gardeners while volunteering 50 hours within the program. Certified Master Gardeners complete at least 25 hours of volunteer service and 10 hours of Continuing Education.  The 2019 training will be held on nine Tuesdays, January 29 - March 26 . The cost of the training is $225. Partial scholarships available.

ORCAS ISLAND COMMUNITY CHURCH INVITES CHILDREN TO PIONEER CLUBS 
(Mondays, until May 13, 6:00 - 7:30 pm @ Community Church)
At Pioneer Clubs®️, boys and girls from preschool through elementary school build healthy relationships with caring Christian adults, peers, and most importantly, Christ. This is OICC's fifth year of Pioneer Clubs®️. Each week focuses on all the areas in which children grow: social, physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual. It is non-competitive, allowing all children to succeed and feel included. Pioneer Clubs®️ offer a wide range of skill-building activities like crafts, games, baking, music, drama, carpentry and more. Pioneer Clubs®️ are for kids entering Pre-Kinder (age 4) through 5th grade.

HEALING ARTS CENTER JADE PLANT FUNDRAISER
In it's 30th year, the Healing Arts Center has become an integral part of the Orcas Island Community.  For those of you that know and love the practitioners and building, you have also come to recognize the iconic Jade Plant in our lobby.  A gift to the Center in its early days, the original plant is as old as we are -- 30 years!  As part of our fundraising for our new foundation and building addition, we are offering a limited number of heritage cuttings from the mother Jade plant with a $100 donation to the Healing Arts Center. The Healing Arts Center is a 501(c)(3), that provides discounted services to low income community members as well as thousands of dollars in donations every year to schools and other non-profits on Orcas.

Highlights of the presentation include the Moran Photograph Collection, Phantom of the Opera music performed on the Mansion's 1,972 pipe Aeolian organ, stories of the Mansion's most colorful residents, and Christopher's original piano compositions played on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano. Complimentary and open to the public.

ORCAS CENTER ART SHOW:  Nature and Psyche 
(October 4 - 30.  Opening Reception is Thursday, October 11, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm)
Orcas island artists Ranna McNeil and Robert Dash are excited to share their work at Orcas Center during the month of October. McNeil and Dash are award-winning artists with work shown internationally (and locally at Artworks). Their show 'Nature and Psyche' explores their fascination with nature and the human spirit.  McNeil's work features many new cast glass vessels, sculptures and paintings.  Dash will show several new photo montages stemming from his book, On An Acre Shy of Eternity, and his Orcas TEDx talk.   Both artists will talk about their work at the reception October 11 at 6:00 pm. Everyone is welcome; please bring your friends.

PATOS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE EXHIBIT
(Opens October 17 to March 30, 12:00-3:00 pm @ Orcas Island Historical Museum)
Don't miss our winter exhibit on the history of Patos Island lighthouse from its inception in 1893 through its automation in 1974, then the rehabilitation in 2008 by the Bureau of Land Management.
Curated by and in partnership with  Keepers of Patos Light , this exhibit was on display this summer on Patos and will be available on Orcas until March 2019. It has been expanded to include items in the Museum's collection that have never been displayed before including the Patos Island Visitor's Register. Admission by donation.

THE ORCAS ISLAND ARTWORKS 
The Orcas Island Artworks Gallery is a favorite Orcas destination housed in a historic building on the island's East side. Built in 1938 as a strawberry barreling plant, the lovingly restored landmark now showcases the best of our island's crafts and fine arts. Open daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
