DEER HARBOR NOVEMBER POTLUCK
(Friday, November 9, 6:30 pm @ Deer Harbor Community Club)
Join us for our Thanksgiving Potluck! The Auxiliary is providing the turkey and gravy. Please bring a side dish to share, along with your place setting and beverage.  We're also accepting donations of non-perishable food items for the Food Bank, so please bring what you can. Acceptable donations are food items that are factory sealed and no more than two years outdated. No home-produced goods. We also accept fresh, clean fruits and vegetables. Everyone is welcome!

SACRED JOURNEYS PRESENTED BY HISTORICAL MUSEUM
(Sunday, November 11, 3:00 pm @ Seaview Theater)
We are pleased to announce "Sacred Journeys," an evening of film and information on tribal journeys by canoe. It features a presentation by Sharon Kinley, Director of the Coast Salish Institute at Northwest Indian College, and a showing of the film "Glwa: Resurgence of the Ocean Going Canoe."  This is an important fundraiser that supports capacity building at Orcas Island Historical Museums for cross cultural events and also the upcoming "Sacred Journeys" traveling exhibit on ancient canoe culture and today's canoe resurgence.  The ticket price is $25 for non-museum members and $20 for members. The ticket price includes appetizers, the film and the discussion.

THE ORCAS ISLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT HONORS OUR VETERANS
(Tuesday, November 13, 8:45 am @ Orcas Island School) 
All community members are invited, most especially veterans, to a Veterans' Day Assembly.  The event will start with a continental breakfast at 8:45 in the cafeteria. Please RSVP for the breakfast by leaving a message at  360-376-2286.  The assembly will begin at 9:30. All grades,  K-12, will honor our veterans.  The Community Band will play patriotic music, elementary school students will provide quotes and sing songs highlighting the meaning of service, and middle/high school students will honor our veterans with a "White Table." (The table is a place of honor, set in memory of fallen, missing , or imprisoned military service-members.)  We are honored to have Pat Ayers, a veteran nurse with the Navy, be a featured speaker at the event.

ORCAS ISLAND GARDEN CLUB PROGRAM
(Wednesday, November 14, 10:00 am @ Orcas Center)
Dr. Linda Ann Vorobik will present a photo-illustrated talk on her botanical travels to New Zealand entitled "A Yankee Botanist's Search for Native New Zealand Bush". She will bring her cards, prints, and original botanical art along with a selection of silk scarves for sale; 35% of proceeds are gifted back to the garden club. Visitors are encouraged to become a member of the garden club. All attendees may socialize, share gardening info and advice, and enjoy treats in the social hour following the meeting.



CELEBRATE INDIAN ISLAND
(Thursday, November 15, 5:30 pm @ Episcopal Parish Hall)
Kwiaht and community scientists of the Indian Island Marine Health Observatory invite the public to the ninth annual monitoring report on Indian Island and Fishing Bay, Eastsound's "window on the sea". Music, displays, tributes to volunteers and a slideshow presentation of this past year's research results will be followed by a light buffet provided by the Orcas Village Store. Everything is free, and family friendly.

It's time for the Third Thursday Floating Ukulele Jam! Bring your uke, your friends, and some songs to share and join us on the interisland ferry on Thursday, November 15: departs Friday Harbor at 5:45 pm, Orcas at 6:45 pm, Shaw at 7:00 pm, swings over to Lopez at 7:20 pm, then back home again. Everyone invited to play, sing along, or just listen and enjoy the company - please help spread the word throughout the county!

In the years to come, this service will be hosted by our different congregations," explains senior pastor Brian Moss. "I am glad that we are coming together as a community to share in this time of gratitude."

VETERAN'S NAVIGATORS AVAILABLE TO HELP
(Saturday, November 10, 9:00 am-3:00 pm @ Public School Cafeteria)
We are pleased to announce that the Navigators will be at the Orcas Island Public School Cafeteria and Library on Saturday, November 10 (the last group of veterans will be taken for their one-on-one with a Veteran Navigator at 2:00 pm). The Veteran Navigators volunteer their time in Whatcom County one Saturday each month with the exception of December and two summer months.  If you miss the Veteran Navigators on November 10, take a look at their Facebook page (Whatcom County Veteran Navigators) to find out where they will be assisting veterans in Whatcom County in January.

EDC WORKSHOP: PAID FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE LAW

Business owners and bookkeepers will learn the details of Washington State's new paid family and medical leave law. Join the EDC and the Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD), for this free and important workshop. 
The class will cover the new Paid Family & Medical Leave Law requiring employers to provide paid sick leave to most employees beginning this year.

HEALING ARTS CENTER JADE PLANT FUNDRAISER
In it's 30th year, the Healing Arts Center has become an integral part of the Orcas Island Community.  For those of you that know and love the practitioners and building, you have also come to recognize the iconic Jade Plant in our lobby.  A gift to the Center in its early days, the original plant is as old as we are -- 30 years!  As part of our fundraising for our new foundation and building addition, we are offering a limited number of heritage cuttings from the mother Jade plant with a $100 donation to the Healing Arts Center.

Highlights of the presentation include the Moran Photograph Collection, Phantom of the Opera music performed on the Mansion's 1,972 pipe Aeolian organ, stories of the Mansion's most colorful residents, and Christopher's original piano compositions played on the 1900 Steinway Grand Piano. Complimentary and open to the public.

ART WITH CARLA

Member price,  $6.  Non-member,  $10.  Minimum 3 Participants.  Max. 10.   Welcome autumn with a new angle of light and reach for the stars through laughter and fun with our local Islander artist, Carla Stanley. Unleash the wild creator within! Art with Carla classes are being planned right now. The class will be about process not product, with an emphasis on doodling, colorist montage and creative expression. (Currently, Carla's art is at Washington Federal.)

JACQUELINE KEMPFER ARTIST STUDIO

PATOS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE EXHIBIT
(Until March 30, 12:00-3:00 pm @ Orcas Island Historical Museum)
Don't miss our winter exhibit on the history of Patos Island lighthouse from its inception in 1893 through its automation in 1974, then the rehabilitation in 2008 by the Bureau of Land Management.
Curated by and in partnership with  Keepers of Patos Light , this exhibit was on display this summer on Patos and will be available on Orcas until March 2019. It has been expanded to include items in the Museum's collection that have never been displayed before including the Patos Island Visitor's Register. Admission by donation.

THE ORCAS ISLAND ARTWORKS 
The Orcas Island Artworks Gallery is a favorite Orcas destination housed in a historic building on the island's East side. Built in 1938 as a strawberry barreling plant, the lovingly restored landmark now showcases the best of our island's crafts and fine arts. Open daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
