The Positive Bookworm Book Club

The Positive Bookworm (PBW) is a place for PPG members to learn together, support each other, network and have fun! The PBW will feature two different reading groups—one will read books and the other will read academic papers. PPG members will be free to participate in either or both groups as often as they wish.

To help ensure that everyone achieves a high level of comprehension and enjoyment, the PBW will offer support for participants with learning disabilities or who may need help navigating and progressing through academic texts. And, whenever possible, authors of the selected books and academic papers will attend meetings to discuss their works, explain difficult concepts and answer participants’ questions. Plus, participants in the book-reading group can earn CEUs!

For more information, click here.

The first Positive Bookworm book-reading series will begin in January 2023. Here are the details and registration link:

PPG's Inclusivity Division Issues

20 Scholarships

The Pet Professional Guild's Inclusivity Division has awarded 20 scholarships for the Scent and Scentability event and Canine Scent Advanced Handling Skills workshop in November.

"We're very excited to offer 20 scholarships to our less-represented members of PPG to attend this exciting and useful educational event," said Lorena Patti of PPG's Inclusivity Division. "It's a wonderful opportunity for professional development that many wouldn't have otherwise been able to take advantage of."

Congratulations to all the scholarship recipients!

California Legislation Update

An official notification has gone out from California Governor Gavin Newsom regarding new dog-training legislation he signed on September 13, 2022, called the Dog Trainer Sufficiency Act:

Assembly Bill No. 1901, Chapter 276 - An act to add Chapter 12.5 (commencing with Section 122395) to Part 6 of Division 105 of the Health and Safety Code, relating to dog training

According to the Legislative Counsel’s Digest:

This bill would require a dog trainer, as defined, to disclose in writing to a purchaser of dog training services at the time of purchase, any civil judgments related to the dog trainer’s services, and any criminal animal cruelty convictions against the dog trainer or an employee, as specified. The bill would require the dog trainer and the purchaser to sign the written disclosure. The bill would expressly authorize a person to bring a civil action for damages arising from a violation of the requirements related to that written disclosure.

PPG was informed 3 years ago, prior to COVID, that there was no interest in any legislation efforts to restrict equipment or mandate any philosophy or approach with regard to dog training in California. From our perspective, this is a small step in the right direction.
