March 2021 Edition
PRISMA 2021 at-a-glance
A special strings-only edition of PRISMA is being planned for June 14 to 26 in Powell River, in accordance with any COVID-19 health protocols that are in place this summer. This smaller orchestra will be comprised of violinists, violists, cellists and bassists from within British Columbia, performing repertoire that simply hasn't been possible in past iterations of PRISMA. Limited repertoire has already been unveiled!
String orchestra concerts, as well as chamber music concerts from student quartets and quintets, will round out our musical offerings and the Victoria-based and internationally-renowned Lafayette String Quartet will serve as our Artists in Residence. They will also perform some of the great string quartet repertoire. Additional guest artists include violinist Terence Tam and cellist Brian Yoon (Victoria Symphony) and bassist Dylan Palmer (Vancouver Symphony), with even more to be announced.
While you wait for their visit, enjoy Part 1 and Part 2 of this recently-recorded concert from the Lafayette String Quartet celebrating the mutual admiration between Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven.
Virtual AGM makes PRISMA history
PRISMA members, staff and board came together on Zoom on January 28 for our Annual General Meeting. Entertainment on video, voting by polls, presentations via screen-share. A virtual end to a virtual year. Thanks to all who joined us.
We are pleased to announce Brendan and Heather Allen as the recipients of our 2021 Fellowship Award, honouring their outstanding service and dedication to the growth and development of PRISMA.
“In the line of legendary PRISMA Fellows who have supported us in an incredible way, I am thrilled to present this award to a couple who is very dear to my heart,” said PRISMA Artistic Director Arthur Arnold. “Every year you can find Brendan helping to set up our PRISMA facilities with the volunteer crew, and for years Heather has written all the thank-you cards that PRISMA sends to its donors after a contribution has been received. Both have helped students attend PRISMA financially through their ongoing donations to our Musical Merit Scholarship Fund, and they have also volunteered as homestay hosts for pianist Edwin Kim during the PRISMA Festival.”
