Next Month... It's the Festival!
Barb Neri - Transportation & Lodgings Coordinator
Barb is our newest PRISMA recruit! Join us in giving her a big congratulations and welcome to the team!
5 Questions for Barb:
1. What brought you to Powell River?
The first time in 1968, my parents VW bus. I grew up here and moved after graduating from Max. Lots of visiting over the years, but I never really thought about moving back until my mom asked for my assistance. In October of 2017, I was in a place of transition that allowed my return to Powell River and the opportunity to help my mom. So here I am, again!

2. What is it about PRISMA that inspires you?
It’s creativity and desire for new knowledge, ideas, experiences and friendships. Like great music, PRISMA takes a whole lot of lovely, individual notes and mixes them up, challenges them, and gets them to work together in ways perhaps not considered before. The result is a rich and beautiful symphony of sound and fellowship.

3. What’s your perfect day?
If all my kids are with me, then whatever it is will be perfect. Throw in a beach fire and a glass of good whiskey at sunset on a warm summer night...... ahhhhh.

4. Tell us 3 fun facts about yourself!
  • I am not a morning person and need much coffee to become human.
  • I like to refinish ordinary furniture in fun designs and creative ways.
  • I read. A lot. Fiction, non-fiction, information, opinions, biographies, histories, whatever I can. I usually have several books going in a variety of themes and genres.

5. What song best describes your life, and why?
Bon Jovi - It’s My Life.
Oh Lordy I’ve made mistakes, got bashed around some, loved and lost, fallen, crashed and burned - but this is my life. It’s also been beautiful, adventurous, exciting, creative, enriching and full of love too. I’m proud of everything (ok almost everything) and I’ll admit my faults and errors and move on to the next adventure. I am who I am. No excuses, no regrets.
You better stand tall when they're calling you out. Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down.

Don't miss out: Taylor will take the stage with the PRISMA Festival Orchestra at the Gala Opening Concert on June 20 at 7:30 pm. She will also be at the Powell River Public Library on June 15 at 2 pm for a panel discussion.
We have some very exciting news:

Our 2018 Concerto Competition winner, Taylor Fleshman will be returning for PRISMA 2019! Almost 12 months to the day since her jaw-dropping performance in the final round, the American harpist will once again be front and centre on the Evergreen Theatre stage to give us a career update like no other.
Alexander Mosolov’s “lost” 1939 harp concerto will be on the program, though understanding the significance of that choice will require some additional backstory. Luckily, you can read all about it in this month's Powell River Living Magazine!
Did someone say 'Chocolate'?
They're back! Come on in to the office and grab your official PRISMA chocolate bar. These treats were a hit two years ago - so much so we just had to get them again!

Your choice of milk or dark chocolate: $5.00 each

Spring Concert Highlights
Thanks to all who joined us last month!
Our Spring Concert tour featuring pianist Edwin Kim was a smashing success. Starting out at the gorgeous Bill Reid Gallery in Vancouver and ending with a delicious brunch at 40 Knots Winery, we shared music with hundreds in the region.

Balfe presented with PRISMA Fellowship
Back in January we announced our three inaugural PRISMA fellows: Sharon Thomas, Paul Schachter and Brian Balfe. This past weekend, we were pleased to present Brian with the honours in person.

Balfe’s contributions as a founding board member, past president and ambassador have significantly expanded PRISMA’s reach and patronship in the Comox Valley. He and business partner Don Somers continue to be instrumental with our annual 'Sail to the Symphony' tour and helping us stage events over on the island. The PRISMA Endowment Fund was also a pet project of Balfe’s during his tenure, and one he continues to find donors for to this day.
PRISMA in the Media
Did you know? Arthur stopped by the Breakfast Television Vancouver studios during our Spring concert tour and chatted about the upcoming festival. In less than three minutes, he gave host Thor Diakow an impressive rundown of all things PRISMA! Watch it and see for yourself here!

Ever wonder what happens behind the scenes during a commercial break? Check this out!
