SEPTEMBER 2022

We recently found our forever homes!

Find Your Fur-Ever Pet Today!

Dear Friend,

Is it me, or did the summer go by in the blink of an eye? While I’m looking forward to everything fall has to offer, I want to celebrate the wonderful things that happened over the past few months with the help of our volunteers, donors and community partners:

  • Our Pawsibility Ball, held August 27, was a huge success and raised over $250,000!
  • Our Mobile Veterinary Clinic (MABEL) has been busy! Since April, the clinic has provided low-cost vaccines to 155 animals and performed 103 feline spay,  90 feline neuter, 40 canine spay and 39 canine neuter surgeries to animals in Summit County.
  • Over the course of the summer, a total of 94 dogs, 478 cats, 12 rabbits and 7 guinea pigs were adopted.

And we have much more to look forward to. With a new schoolyear ahead, we’re excited to expand the No More Bullying ® program to local schools, thanks to a grant from The Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, a KeyBank Trust. Read more about it below and consider how you could help bring that program to your community.

We will also be prepared for the hard but necessary work of rescuing animals from hoarding situations in Summit County. As you’ll read in this month’s PawPrint, hoarding cases are on the rise. We are grateful for our Humane Agents and their commitment to giving our furry friends a safe and happy environment.

And we’re looking forward to our fundraising event next month– Bow Wow Bingo! I hope to see you there on October 21.

Thank you for your support of the Humane Society of Summit County. Our furry friends thank you, too.

Sincerely,

Diane Johnson-Owens

No More Bullying!® Coming To A School Near You

Pop quiz: what do bullying and animal cruelty have in common? Answer: kids who bully are more likely to be cruel to animals as well, according to recent studies. The Humane Society of Summit County is working to address that issue this year through a free program called No More Bullying!®. We are able to offer and expand this program thanks to a grant from The Kenneth A. Scott Charitable Trust, a KeyBank Trust. Targeted towards 3rd – 5th graders, the interactive program teaches kids how to prevent bullying and violence, while teaching compassion for animals and people through five separate one-hour sessions led by Adam Karson, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Humane Society of Summit County. Each session focuses on one of the Five Core Values:

  • Responsibility
  • Compassion
  • Being Humane
  • Self-control
  • Integrity

No More Bullying!® can be used in school classrooms, summer camps, after school clubs or other youth programs. To schedule a No More Bullying!® program at your school or youth program, or to learn more, contact Adam at [email protected].

HSSC rescued 100 pets from hoarding situations last year

Animal hoarding is on the rise in Summit County. Over the past year alone, HSSC assisted with three separate hoarding investigations, the largest one resulting in a rescue of 7 puppies, 15 dogs, 15 birds, 10 cats, and 3 kittens, all living in deplorable conditions. The other two rescues involved 19 beagles/beagle dachshund mix dogs and puppies and more than 30 cats. Almost all the animals were malnourished and infested with fleas and other ailments.

Hoarding occurs when someone acquires more animals than can be adequately cared for in a safe environment. While it may be convenient to dismiss hoarders as being negligent or having malicious intent, it’s not that simple. Medical experts who study animal hoarding refer to it as a psychiatric illness, in that the hoarders desire to care for the animals but are too overwhelmed and under resourced to do so properly.

Just because someone owns several pets does not automatically classify them as a hoarder. However, the following conditions could indicate a hoarding situation:

  • Animals are lethargic, underweight and show behavioral conflict
  • The individual insists all the animals are healthy and happy – even though there are clear indications of illness and distress
  • The owner has several animals and is unsure of how many pets they have in their care
  • Fleas and vermin are present
  • Their home is deteriorated (clutter, broken furniture, holes in the wall, dirty windows)

Here at HSSC, we are thankful for our trained Humane Agents, medical team, kennel staff and adoption staff who work countless hours to rescue, provide the necessary medical care, behavioral assessments, and love to each one of the rescued animals in the past year. Hayes, one of the last remaining cats from the large hoarding case, and this month’s Extended Resident feature, is currently up for adoption. To meet Hayes or any of our other adoptable animals, contact us today at (330) 487-0333 ext. 226 to schedule an appointment.

Meet our Extended Resident, Hayes!

Meet Hayes! Hayes is a 7-year-old female cat looking for her forever home. Hayes is an absolute love bug! She has a quirky personality and cute meows. Hayes loves to be petted and will eagerly greet you with a meow and a head bump! Hayes came from a home where she lived with small dogs and lots of other cats so if you're looking for a friend for your kitty at home, Hayes may be the perfect fit. If you're interested in a lovable cat with a wonderful personality, give us a call at (330) 487-0333 ext. 226 to schedule an appointment.

Pawsiblity Ball raises over $250,000

We are grateful for the 400+ supporters who came together at our Pawsibility Ball on August 27 in support and celebration of animal rescue! It was a powerful evening, and the $250,000 that was raised that evening was nothing short of transformative.

The evening could not have been possible without the support and long-standing partnerships of Cascade Subaru and Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. If you missed the recognition videos that evening, be sure to check out the Cascade video and Thirsty Dog video. We are grateful for their support to our lifesaving mission.

This year, we set a goal to raise $125,000 through the Fund-a- Need, and thanks to some extra special and very heartfelt gifts,

we met our goal!

This tremendous support will reach every corner of our organization and ensure that we can save even more lives in the months to come. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for your overwhelming support!
