June 24
Come join us at the historic, and 2019 Preservation Achievement Award winner, The Cliff House for the Preservation Dallas Annual Meeting on June 24 at 6:00. The Cliff House was constructed in 1936 for the Davis Street Baptist Church by the pastor Virgil Hunton and volunteers. In 1958, the church moved and other churches used the building until the 2000s. Good Space acquired the church building in 2008 and stabilized the structure. In 2016, the church was leased by an event and wedding services firm, and an extensive renovation was undertaken. The revitalized building is now a regular venue for weddings and events, adding to the life and vitality of Oak Cliff. 

During the meeting a history of the building will be presented along with a summary of Preservation Dallas' work in the past year and plans for the new fiscal year. The general membership will also elect new board members at the meeting to the Preservation Dallas Board of Trustees. The following is the slate of nominees for consideration:

Chris Bowers – Chris a lawyer with Miklos Cinclair, PLLC and represents landowners and developers in a broad range of planning and zoning matters. Before that, he worked in the City Attorney's office for the City of Dallas and served as counsel for the Landmark Commission for several years. Chris has also written many articles on preservation law and has spoken across the county on that topic. He believes that with his track record of preserving the history of Dallas he can help Preservation Dallas with achieving its objectives.

Nick Brooks – Nick is a lawyer serving as counsel for EMJ Corporation, a construction company. He has been involved in Preservation Dallas with the Urban Armadillos for the past six years and has served on their board for the past four years. Nick says that Dallas has a much more interesting history than it is given credit for and he'd like to be a part of preserving that history.

Jason Harper – Jason is Founder and President of Echelon Leadership, a company which oversees all aspects of programming, design and project management for clients. Jason serves on several preservation related committees and is active in the Preservation Issues Committee of Preservation Dallas. Jason firmly believes that the world's greatest cities are those that preserve and honor their historical assets and he hopes to positively contribute to safeguarding those assets that Dallas has left.

Morgan Harrison  – Morgan is a Senior Project Coordinator with GFF Architects. She has a graduate degree in architectural history and certificate of historic preservation. She has been involved with the Preservation Dallas Young Professionals (PDYP) group and serves as the chair. Morgan has been interested in historic preservation since college and thinks it is extremely important to preserve our history, which includes our built environment.

Juanita Nañez – Juanita is a human resources and diversity consultant with The Hopkins Group and has worked in executive leadership in the banking, energy, and hospitality industries. She serves as a board member and past president of the Dallas Mexican American Historical League and is the Vice Chair of the Dallas County Historical Commission. She says that she enjoys discovering and uncovering past history to share with the community and the public in general.

The Open-Ended City Available at Preservation Dallas!
The newly released The Open-Ended City is now available in our bookstore! The book is a collection of articles written by long-time Dallas Morning News architecture critic, David Dillon, and edited by University of Texas at Arlington professor and architectural historian, Kathryn E. Holliday. A full section of the book is devoted to historic preservation, including an important article about renowned Dallas architect, Henry B. (Hal) Thomson, who designed the Aldredge House and many other important houses on Swiss Avenue and in Highland Park.

Proposals Due July 31 for
Legacies Dallas History Conference
The organizers of the 21 st Annual Legacies Dallas History Conference welcome proposals from both professional and lay historians on the theme, “Disasters: Natural and Man-made.” Topics might include natural disasters such as the severe drought of 1951-1957 or the 1980 heat wave; fires, such as a spectacular one that destroyed the Golden Pheasant Restaurant in 1954; explosions like one that rocked the Baker Hotel in 1946; pandemics such as the 1918 influenza outbreak, or a meningitis and encephalitis outbreak in 1966; the Elm Street cave-in of 1967; or the mass shooting at Ianni’s Restaurant and Club in 1984. Proposals should be accompanied with sample images if possible.

All papers must be based on original research and must not have been presented or published elsewhere. The best papers will be published in a subsequent issue of Legacies: A History Journal for Dallas and North Central Texas . Those interested in presenting papers should submit a brief summary of their proposal by JULY 31, 2019, to “Dallas History Conference, 1515 S. Harwood St., Dallas, TX 75215,” or by email. Those selected will be notified by August 31, 2019. The 21st Annual Legacies History Conference will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2020.

PRESERVATION ISSUES
Kalita Humphreys Theater - After 16 speakers, Preservation Dallas included, and lots of discussion the City Council voted unanimously to approve the Dallas Theater Center's (DTC) lease extension for the Kalita. There are also some checks and balances approved with the lease extension and a steering committee created to work on the update to the 2010 Master Plan for the theater with review requirements of work on the plan to the City Council Quality of Life Committee, Park and Recreation Department and Board, and the Landmark Commission. The Council made it clear to DTC that preservation was to be of paramount importance with the update to the plan. On the steering committee there will be two spots out of fourteen for the design community with one for Preservation Dallas and one for AIA Dallas.

Landmark Review Process Changes to Preservation Ordinance - On June 20th the City Plan Commission (CPC) will hear the results from a CPC Ad-Hoc Committee on potential changes to the process for initiating the Landmark designation process for individual structures and expansion of or creation of a historic district. Last year a committee was formed by the Landmark Commission to review changes to the ordinance based on comments from the City Council at the appeal hearing for the expansion of the Lake Cliff historic district. The committee met for six times over three months and came up with proposed changes which were subsequently recommended by the Landmark Commission and briefed to the Quality of Life, Arts & Culture Committee and the Mobility Solutions, Infrastructure & Sustainability Committee. Both of those Council Committees were complimentary of the changes. When the case came to the City Plan Commission for them to discuss the changes they decided to set up their own ad-hoc committee to review the changes. That committee met three times and has developed a set of recommendations to be approved by CPC next week. Staff has recommended holding the item under advisement until the July 11th CPC meeting. CPC will decide next week whether or not they want to hear the case or hold it under advisement. To read about the case you can go here to download the docket for the CPC meeting. We are under construction at the Wilson House! The beautiful and historic mural on the ceiling of the foyer in the house is currently undergoing repair and restoration necessitated by a piece of the mural which came loose and sections that were separating from the ceiling as well as issues with the plaster under the mural. The Meadows Foundation hired Brown Mountain Art & Antique Restoration to take on the work and Laura Pate, owner of the company, has been leading the work. The job is no small task due to the complexity of the required repairs. Work began on June 3 when scaffolding was erected in the foyer to better access the ceiling and is expected to last until mid-July.

The mural is actually painted on canvas and adhered to the original 1899 plaster ceiling. The mural is not believed to be original to the house and is thought to have been installed sometime before 1910. Several options were looked at for the repair, including removing the ceiling, and the final decision was to restore the mural in situ. That decision required the plaster ceiling to be repaired from above necessitating the removal of the floor above the mural in my office right where my desk sits forcing me to relocate to the spare office for the duration of the work.

Laura had Robert Marshall of R. Alden Marshall & Associates LLC, an art and architecture restoration firm, come work on repairing the plaster ceiling from above after the Meadows maintenance staff removed the floor. Robert saturated the plaster from above through the lathe with an adhesive compound to secure the plaster back to the lathe. Acrylic panels to protect the mural were used in combination with jacks to gently put pressure on the plaster and lathe while the adhesive cured. One section of the ceiling had to be replaced with sheetrock due to the failure of the plaster and the canvas in that section was pulled away to allow that to happen.

Now that the plaster ceiling has been stabilized, work has begun on the restoration of the mural. Laura and her crew have adhered the section of canvas which was pulled back for the sheetrock installation and have been working to reattach loose sections in other areas with new adhesives injected through the canvas. They are also going to fill in uneven and torn areas with new paint as well as improving on past repair efforts not up to current conservation standards. The areas that are damaged will be touched in matching the original mural design. The whole mural then will be cleaned and a new conservation varnish applied to the mural.  

According to Laura the mural is a very lovely piece of art and she was surprised after getting up close and shining better light on it which allowed her to see the details and what a sweet painting it really is. Feel free to stop by to see the work in progress and when it’s done come take a look at our restored mural. And a big thanks to the Meadows Foundation for funding the project and preserving a wonderful interior historic feature of the Wilson House!
