2021 Fall Tour
Saturday, October 30
On Halloween weekend take a stroll with us through centuries of craftsmanship, lush landscapes and learn about figures from local and national history. The day will begin at the iconic 1937 Hillcrest Mausoleum, designed by Anton Korn, with a discussion highlighting the evolution of funerals and cemeteries, marker symbolism and the built environment. The tour will then take you outdoors to explore at Freedman's Memorial, Greenwood, McCree, Oak Cliff, Oakland, Temple Emanu-El and Western Heights Cemeteries. Visit some of the most beautiful cemeteries in Dallas while seeing some of the most famous gravesites the city has to offer. This will be a full day of exploration and you do not want to miss it!
Historic House Specialist
seminar is next week!
On September 29th and 30th, become an authority of historic Dallas neighborhoods! This popular seminar includes lectures from local experts on architectural history and styles of Dallas, historic and conservation district designations, sustainability, how to research the history of a building, and more! Participants receive a copy of Virginia McAlester’s A Field Guide to American Houses and a complimentary one year Individual membership to Preservation Dallas. 

This class will be held virtually over a day and a half.
Farewell to Irene and Welcome to Jennifer!
September 30th will be the last day for Irene at Preservation Dallas. Her husband John is running the San Antonio office of Architexas and the family made the move to San Antonio last month. She has been working remotely since then to get us through Summer Sizzlers, North Texas Giving Day and the fall HHS class next week. Irene has been with Preservation Dallas for over eight years and has done an outstanding job with memberships, programs, web site and social media along with helping out on so many other projects and events. We will miss Irene and thank her for her wonderful dedication and service to Preservation Dallas over the years!

This week her replacement, not that you can replace Irene, started so that Irene can get her up to speed on the Membership and Programs position duties. The new person is Jennifer Anderson, whom many of you may already know from her work as a Senior Planner in the Office of Historic Preservation at the city. At Preservation Dallas she will use her married name of Jennifer Solomon. She married while working at the City of Dallas and it was too complicated to change everything over to her married name.

We are excited to have Jennifer come on board as she has a wealth of experience and skills that will help the organization. Jennifer was born in Houston, grew up in north Texas, and graduated from Rockwall High School. After high school she worked in banking for a while and took some classes before deciding to attend SMU to get a degree in Anthropology as she wanted to become an archaeologist. With her degree, she went to work for a local Cultural Resources Management firm where she served as a field archaeologist. In 2008, with the downturn in the economy and less work for archaeologists she decided to return to school.

She left the state to attend the University of New Orleans and while in school she worked as an intern with the Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans, a preservation advocacy nonprofit similar to Preservation Dallas. While working there she got more interested in historic buildings and due to that, she ended up getting a Master of Science in Urban Studies with an emphasis in historic preservation. After graduate school ended she stayed in New Orleans and continued to work for the Preservation Resource Center as the Assistant to the Executive Director.

When the job came open at the City of Dallas in 2014, she saw an opportunity to return closer to her family. She was also interested in having the opportunity to work in the governmental side of historic preservation and to work on increasing the public’s knowledge of historic preservation through educational outreach. While at the City of Dallas she worked on improvements to the historic preservation section of the City’s web site, updated the maps of the city’s historic districts and put them in a searchable Google map, handled Certificate of Appropriateness applications for several historic districts, and coordinated the Demolition Delay program after Mark Doty left. 

Jennifer will make a wonderful addition to the Preservation Dallas team with her experience and skills. She will be a great asset as we continue to fight to preserve Dallas’ historic places! Welcome Jennifer to Preservation Dallas!
New Addition to OHP Staff
Just a few weeks ago Trevor Brown joined the staff in the Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) as a Senior Planner. Although he is new to OHP, he is not to the City of Dallas as he previously worked as a Senior Planner handling Conservation Districts. You may also recognize Trevor as he and his wife Makalah have volunteered at numerous PD events.

Trevor is originally from Baton Rouge and while growing up his family took lots of trips to historic sites and national parks around the country. At an early age he learned what a treasure they were. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he got a history degree. He said that he stumbled upon historic preservation while he was volunteering at the school’s archives processing collections, which he found fascinating.

After graduating, he worked in construction for a little while and then decided to pursue preservation as a career. He was accepted into the Savanah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and moved to Savanah. The master’s program there was attractive to him as it was hands on, especially with restoration work. And living in a great historic city like Savanah was also a big bonus! He participated in a couple of great internships while in school, including in the historic city of Annapolis working on the conservation of John Paul Jones crypt at the U.S. Naval Academy and working a summer for a historic consulting firm in Washington D.C. on projects like Supreme Court Justice John Marshall’s house (1790) and the original terminal of what later became Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

In his last year at SCAD, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. One of his professors organized a team of students to head to Mississippi to help the preservation community with recovery efforts. He was on the first SCAD team to Mississippi and went on additional trips to help during his last year of school. After graduating, he stayed in Savanah for a summer and then the decided to take a job with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to work on the Gulf Coast helping to administer a federal grant program to help restore historic buildings damaged by Katrina. He said that he felt obligated to return to the region he was from and to help those who were struggling to save the historic places that they loved.

Trevor spent about six years on the Gulf Coast and as the grant program was coming to an end he decided to take another job in the incredibly historic city of Natchez, Mississippi. There he worked as the Deputy Director of the Historic Natchez Foundation, working on preserving the historic places in the over 300-year-old town. After six years there, he decided to make another change, this time to Dallas.

He moved to Dallas in 2018 to work for the City of Dallas on Conservation Districts as he saw it as an opportunity to do something different and to experience life in a new state and a much bigger city than Natchez, which has a population of 15,000. When the position came open in the Office of Historic Preservation he decided to take another leap and he was interested in getting to work more closely on preservation cases with owners of historic buildings. He feels this is more in his wheelhouse and is excited to get out in the field and interact with people putting his knowledge of conservation and preservation to work. 

With the departure of Jennifer from OHP, he will be taking over some of her job duties including the Demolition Delay process and the review of Certificate of Appropriateness cases for Junius Heights. He will also be doing community outreach to help preservation efforts in the city, especially in districts such as Wheately Place and Tenth Street. To Trevor, Dallas is a place where the new meets the old and he wants to focus on preserving the historic character we have rather than losing it to the new. He also wants to give more credibility to preservation in Dallas and we are all about that!

We are excited to have Trevor on board at the Office of Historic Preservation and look forward to working with him in the future. And don’t worry, he and his wife will still be happy to volunteer at our events! 
In Memoriam: Lindalyn Adams
Lindalyn Adams came by her love for preservation honestly. You probably wouldn’t be surprised to learn that she was a member of the Junior Historians in high school or wore a Victorian-style gown at her wedding. It isn’t even unexpected that, in 1963, she began organizing Fourth of July pageants featuring events in American history and starring the children in her extended family.
 
Lindalyn was good at multi-tasking, and she took the opportunity to make her work for one organization provide a benefit for another. As a leader in the Women’s Auxiliary of the Dallas County Medical Society, she led an effort to collect early medical instruments for the doctor’s office at what is now Dallas Heritage Village and secured the donation of the Aldredge House on Swiss Avenue as the Medical Auxiliary headquarters. She also directly participated in the establishment of Dallas Heritage Village, assisting with the preservation and move of the Millermore mansion, the city’s first house museum, to the park.
 
During the mid-1970s, Lindalyn led both the Dallas County Heritage Foundation, the parent organization for Dallas Heritage Village, and the Dallas County Historical Commission, where she worked to place historical markers for buildings and sites around the county. During this time, the old Texas School Book Depository Building came onto her radar screen, and it took more than a decade of hard work to preserve it and establish The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, with lots of pushback from people who didn’t think that the building should be saved.
 
For most people, that accomplishment might have been enough – followed by a decision to sit back and spend time with the grandkids. But Lindalyn Adams continued her historical efforts, working with the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority to get the trolley running, leading the 1996 celebration of Dallas County’s sesquicentennial, and serving on the board of the Old Red Foundation.
 
Lindalyn’s legacy is truly a lifetime of service to history and preservation. We will miss her.

"Nuestro Oak Cliff" Exhibit is Open!
In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Dallas Mexican American Historical League (DMHAL) is holding a multimedia exhibit at the Latino Cultural Center until October 16. The exhibit focuses on Mexican American life in Oak Cliff.

They will also be holding a several programs in the next month which you can find out more about here.
Has your online research hit a brick wall?
Exciting news for those that would like to research in person again! Now that the public libraries are open again, patron are able to schedule an appointment to do research in the Dallas History and Archives. Appointments will be required and you can set one up by emailing texas@dallaslibrary.org to start the process. They will send you information on how to make the appointment, preparing for your visit, what to expect with your appointment, and a form to fill out. For more information on the library openings go here.

You may also submit reserach requests online if you don't want to go into the library just yet. To do that, use the same email above and send in your research request with the information you are looking for and they will get back to you.
PRESERVATION ISSUES
Geneva Heights Elementary School – DISD is considering the replacement of the school with a new one, which means the demolition of the 1931 school. Help is needed from the community to show support for saving the historic school and incorporating it into a new campus. Email DISD Trustee Dustin Marshall with a request for DISD to preserve the original school. Go here to find out more about this effort.

Longhorn Ballroom – The iconic Longhorn Ballroom was placed on our Most Endangered Historic Places list last year with it going to auction due to foreclosure from the lack of business from COVID. We were afraid it would be purchased by someone who would demolish the building since it isn't protected. It was purchased at auction and now there is a developer who is working to purchase the building from that buyer for reuse as an entertainment venue. The new purchaser wants to keep the building and the spirt of the old Longhorn Ballroom alive. This developer has had success with other historic entertainment venues here in Dallas and in Houston. Stay tuned for more on the Ballroom!

Happy Fall everyone! I know it doesn’t quite feel like it yet, but with the State Fair of Texas opening tomorrow, we definitely know Fall has arrived! I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m excited to return to the Fair this year. And if you go, make sure to take a close look at all of the great, and award winning, work that was done to restore the façade of the Hall of State and to restore the interior, twice!

With only a couple days in to the Fall, it has already shaping up to be a busy one! We have the departure of Irene coming up and Jennifer who started this week. We have been busy getting Jennifer up to speed and trained on everything before Irene ends with us next week. Jennifer is a quick study and is already picking lots of things up. I am sad that Irene will be leaving us as she has been a huge part of Preservation Dallas for the past eight years! We have worked closely together on many programs, events, projects, and preservation issues. She has been a dedicated and hard worker and could always be counted on to go above and beyond her printed job duties. Irene did an excellent job of handling and coordinating the HHS and AHHS programs, brought amazing Summer Sizzlers presentations to the series, transitioned our membership database from an excel spreadsheet to a cloud based CRM platform, kept our web site updated and helped create the new web site, regularly posted to our social media, and much, much, more! I wish her luck in San Antonio and hope that she finds an amazing job down there! Jennifer will have big shoes to fill coming in behind Irene!

We are also gearing up for the Fall Tour next month, which this year will feature some of the incredible historic cemeteries we have in Dallas. This tour is new for us on this scale and in this self-guided tour format while being outside. We thought this would be a great way to tour safely as we are, hopefully, nearing the end of the pandemic. This will be a not to miss tour and a great alternative to our normal architectural tour. And, I’m sure glad to have Donovan back to work on the tour as we couldn’t have done it without him, especially with all of the other things we are working on right now.

Today is North Texas Giving Day as I’m sure you are aware with all of the emails flooding your inbox from different organizations. Preservation Dallas has participated in Giving Day since the beginning and it has become an important part of our budget every year, thanks to our wonderful supporters like you! We hope that we can count on that support again this year to exceed our goal as Giving Day greatly helps us in our mission to preserve the historic places of Dallas!

I would also like to welcome Trevor to his new position at the Office of Historic Preservation! I have known Trevor for a long time, working with him in Mississippi when I was working on Katrina related recovery efforts on the Gulf Coast in my previous position. He did a great job there helping property owners with recovery of their hurricane damaged historic properties using the federal grant money available. He also worked in Natchez as I did way before him, so we know and worked with many of the same folks from Natchez. I was happy when he moved to Dallas to work with Conservation Districts and now I'm happy that is working for the Office of Historic Preservation as I know he will do a great job there!
