At the Enrichment Conference for financial coaches last week, Eddie Cullen, a Ramsey personality, shared a story about becoming a runner. He spoke about the discipline, mindset, and perseverance it takes to keep going—especially when the finish line feels far away. Eddie tied it back to Hebrews 12:1-3, which says,
“…let us run with endurance the race that
is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus…”
That phrase—the race that is set before us—stuck with me. It reminds me that each of us is running a different race. Not the race our friends are running, not the race social media tells us we should be running, but the one that’s uniquely ours.
When it comes to money, comparison is one of the sneakiest thieves of contentment. I know, because I’ve wrestled with it myself this year. My social media feeds are full of friends traveling to international destinations. Meanwhile, my travel calendar for the first part of the year was empty. At first, I found myself feeling “behind,” like I was missing out. Here’s the truth: my race this year looks different. My priorities and financial goals require me to focus on other things right now, and that’s okay.
When we compare our financial decisions to someone else’s highlight reel, we risk making choices that don’t align with our true goals. We might overspend, go into debt, or sacrifice peace of mind just to keep pace with someone who isn’t even running our race.
Are you ready for the challenge this month? Avoid looking at the lane next to you. Instead, fix your eyes on your own finish line. Review your financial goals, remind yourself why they matter, and take one step—just one—that moves you closer to them this week.
Your race. Your pace. Your finish line.
