Kitchens and Baths and Power Tools and More
By Jim Caruk
It's a busy time of year for the Homes Publishing Group, with multiple magazines coming out back to back (to back). As I'm working on this letter I know that the team that puts together Renovation Contractor is wrapping up the Spring 2019 issue of Building Excellence, the official members' magazine for the Canadian Home Builders' Association. If you're not a CHBA member, you can view the digital edition of that publication here.

As soon as they're done that, they'll turn their focus to the April/May 2019 issue of Renovation Contractor. That issue is our annual Kitchens and Baths issue. We have a new contributor, former Cottage Life editor Braden Alexander, looking into the latest fixtures and finishes for the two busiest rooms in the house. We also have long-time contributor Jay Somerset rounding up the most innovative new power tools for us. Plus, the first winner of our new Wow Factor contest is in. See below for how you can enter that. All that and more. The April/May issue will be out in about a month. In the meantime, enjoy reading the rest of our monthly newsletter.

Sincerely,
Jim Caruk

New Contest:
Introducing the Wow! Factor
They say that change is good.

With that in mind, we think it's time to change up our back page contest. Back when we launched the magazine we had "The Doh! Moment," featuring readers' on-the-job mistakes and the lessons they learned from them. Later, we had "Problem, Solved!" which featured readers' ingenious workarounds to some of those little issues that constantly crop up on jobsites. And back in the February/March 2016 issue we introduced, "Work Smart, Not Hard," that acknowledged the many ways readers have figured out to most efficiently go about their day.

In the February/March 2019 issue, we're introducing our latest back page contest: "The Wow! Factor."

These are those situations you walk into and say to yourself, "Wow, what were they thinking?!?What's the worst thing you've ever stumbled upon on a jobsite? And how did you fix it? Share your story (and some photos if you have them) and you could win a great prize.

Email your suggestions to managing editor Allan Britnell ( allan@renocontractor.ca) or snail mail them to "The Wow Factor," Renovation Contractor magazine, 37 Sandiford Dr., Suite 404, Stouffville ON L4A 3Z2.

The Halftime Flow: An inside look at the bathrooms in sports stadiums
While researching material for our Kitchens and Baths issue, managing editor Allan Britnell came across this article about some of the hardest working bathroom fixtures in the world: the ones found in sports stadiums.

Some of my favourite childhood memories were the times my Dad took me to Maple Leaf Gardens to watch the Leafs or Marlies play. One of my least favourite memories was going to the washroom there. Specifically, using the urinal troughs found in the bathrooms up in the nosebleed sections where our tickets usually were. Picture a young kid on tiptoes trying to aim high enough to hit the mark, while being jostled on either side by drunken men casually taking care of business. I was reminded of that somewhat scarring memory when I read this surprisingly interesting
ESPN article about the business of helping people take care of business while attending professional sporting events. One of my key takeaways: Chicago Cubs fans actually requested that urinal troughs remain a fixture at Wrigley Field when the stadium was renovated in 2013. I guess it just proves that one man's nightmare (mine) is several other men's nostalgic memory.
