CHFA homeowners AJ and Yami with their child.

Homeownership is possible. CHFA has helped more than 160,000 Coloradans at different stages in life become homeowners with educational resources and down payment assistance. That includes AJ and Yami, who recently shared their homeownership journey with CHFA.

How did your homebuyer education class benefit you? What did you learn?

“My homebuyer education class benefited me by helping my wife and I understand what it means to own a home like budgeting wise, like the ongoing responsibilities, not just with the time that you buy,” said AJ.

How did CHFA help you achieve homeownership?

“For us, upfront costs were definitely an issue. But then when we found out about CHFA giving the down payment assistance that helped us a lot and encouraged us a lot to actually look at homes and knowing like wow, I actually can afford to buy a home right now,” said AJ.

How has homeownership made a difference in your life?

“Owning our home brings a sense of security in a way. We’re already created some pretty big memories here, just having our first house, making it our own,” said Yami.

How will homeownership contribute to you and your family’s legacy?

“Homeownership will contribute to our legacy by all the memories that we make in this house,” said Yami.

passport to homeownership helps participants prepare for homeownership

Attendees at a station at a passport to homeownership event .

More than 70 people of all ages attended CHFA’s Own Your Tomorrow: Passport to Homeownership on Saturday, August 22nd, at Center for African American Health in Denver. The event included interactive stations designed to help participants learn the steps to homeownership and feel confident through the entire process. Participants shared that they gained a better understanding of the homebuying process after attending the event and that they were likely to attend a homebuying education class as a next step toward buying a home.

At CHFA, we believe informed buyers make successful homeowners, and everyone should have the opportunity for housing stability and economic prosperity. The event, Own Your Tomorrow: Passport to Homeownership, was part of CHFA’s commitment to increasing homeownership in Colorado, including Black and African American homeownership, and all members of the public were welcome to attend. We look forward to hosting similar events in 2027 and hope you can attend!
