What the coronavirus outbreak means for the collector car market

R esults from the Amelia Island auctions last weekend normally would be the biggest thing on our minds here at Hagerty (total sales were down only 3 percent, despite there being one fewer auction house present). But even in the bubble of collector cars, concerns about COVID-19 and its impact on the health of the world's population and economy are hard to ignore.

At the 2020 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance
By Bill Wolf

The Amelia Island Concours held its 25th anniversary this year. The smorgasbord of cars: Stunning, amazing, unbelievably varied and simply wonderful to see under the blue skies of that chilly, clear Sunday March afternoon. On the field, of course, were both prewar and post-war Bentleys and Rolls-Royce motorcars: a selection to make any enthusiast delighted beyond even the greatest of expectations. But part of the automotive adventure is finding an example of another marque having its own long history and admirers.       READ ON

Beatles' Rolls Royce at National Museum of History and Technology (NMHT)
Smithsonian Institution Archives

Secretary S. Dillon Ripley shows the Beatles' Rolls-Royce to Caron Carter in the underground driveway at National Museum of History and Technology, now known as National Museum of American History.

From Torch caption: "A new Smithsonian acquisition, the Beatle's Rolls-Royce, is proudly shown by Secretary Ripley to Caron (Mrs. Chip) Carter following Mrs. Rosalynn Carter's presentation of her Inauguration Gown to the First Ladies Hall. The multi-colored Rolls, which Ripley drove from the Castle to the underground parking space at MHT, was presented to the Smithsonian last December by John Lennon, one of the famed quartet, and his wife. The car will be featured in an exhibit, opening at Cooper-Hewitt in October, on 'Ornament in the 20th Century.'"

From the Phantom IV's First Owners to Hyper-Powered Plane Engines, 15 Things You Didn't Know About Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce's 116-year-old history is filled with ingenuity, innovation and opulence.

For two decades before the 1904 founding of his eponymous car company, now the exemplar of luxury in motoring, Henry Royce had created a myriad of mechanical and electrical inventions, including the electric crane. He shifted his focus to automobiles when he reasoned that he could craft a far finer car than the French manufacturers of the day. Shortly after, an aristocrat by the name of Charles Rolls bought into Royce's vision and the world's preeminent motor company was born.   READ ON

2020 Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge
review: Stealth standout

It's not just a blacked-out exterior design package. T he Black Badge Cullinan offers more style and more substance.
Despite what you might think from its name, there's more to this Rolls-Royce Cullinan than some black paint and dark-chrome finish. Sure, the Black Badge treatment largely caters to folks who want all the lavishness of a six-figure SUV with a slightly more under-the-radar approach. But I'll actually argue that the best thing about this SUV isn't what you can see, it's what you can't.    READ ON

BENTLEY MOTORS SUSPENDS PRODUCTION DUE TO CORONAVIRUS CRISIS

(Crewe, 20 March 2020) Bentley Motors will suspend production from today at its Crewe, UK, factory headquarters for four weeks.
This decision is based on the accelerated rate of infection by coronavirus and understandable restrictions applied, the resulting interruptions in supply chain that will soon be seen, as well as declining demand on some automotive markets.  But most importantly the decision is to protect the health of Bentley's many colleagues, their families and communities.
